Look for a puppy food that is at least 26/16 or greater...
I'm getting very confused. I has a 12 year old that had many joint problems so now I have a 9 week old lab and want to start him off right. My vet said to keep him on Iams puppy food but I know it has a lot of filler. I also notice he is itchng alot.
I was thinking of switch hime to 4health puppy food from Tractor Supply. The ingredients appear to be much better. I also am concerned if he "Tucker" should be on large breed puppy food. Please help bc I have very confused.

What was your breeder feeding?

Breeder was feeding him Iams puppy food. Vet told me to keep him on IAMS.
Generally speaking, most breeders will recommend you stay on their food for at least a large bag or two. Changing the food can cause stomach upset and an unbalance of nutrients. If you trust your breeder, I would stick with the food for a large bag and while you are feeding it you can do some research on what you think would best fit your lifestyle. In the meantime, you can also get in touch with your breeder and find out what he/she thinks about making the switch.
For what it's worth, I personally would not feed 4health kibble.

I would stay on the Iams for 1 bag, then start to transition to a new food. If you are looking for a good food, try to find something at least 26/16. I feed Fromm Grain Free, but they have a great puppy formula in their gold line. Lots here feed Purina Pro Plan and have great success. Talk with JenC, she is the resident expert.

Great advice. I will keep him on the IAMS for one large bag and then gradually switch. I will look at grain free too. I honestly want to buy what is best for Tucker. Thanks for all the advice and keep it coming!
Kwillia - I'm in the same situation as you. I've got an 11 week old pup, and the breeders had him on Royal Canin Maxi Puppy. I'm not a big fan, as they recently changed the formula and chicken meal is the number 1 ingredient. I got one big bag, and when the time comes I'll be switching Bruce over to Fromm, which is what I've been feeding Sophie, and I'm very very happy with the results.
Is this the food you are going to switch Bruce to? Fromm Gold Holistic Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food
How old is sophie and how long has she been on the food.
I will most likely feed Bruce the same as what I'm feeding Sophie. With I rotate the proteins in the grain free line, other than the chicken. Not a fan of chicken. I also work a bag of Salmon a la Veg in every couple bags even though it's not grain free. My understanding is these are all life stage foods, and I estimate Bruce will be 16-18 weeks old when the RC runs out.
Sophie has been on the Fromm for about a year and a half. She is now 2 1/2, and I thing she looks amazing. He coat is shiny, and she doesn't shed nearly as much as other Labs we've had. She has good energy, good solid poops.
