    Dry flaky skin and shedding.

I have female and a male two year old black lab. My female has been breaking out in hives alot and itchy skin. i have started giving her benadryl once a day and this has helped. But i have noticed that they both have very flaky skin and shedding alot here lately and there coats are very dull looking. Is there a certain diet that they should be on or something i can do for there fur.

Allergies can be so difficult to pin down. I'm sorry you and your pup are experiencing this. Allergies can be caused by environmental factors and ingredients in their food or treats. Dry, flaky skin can also be related to food or too frequent bathing and probably other stuff. So, would you mind telling us what your pups are eating currently and aside from the Benadryl, have you tried anything else to improve their coats or what seems to be allergies?

BTW, my dogs have just gone through a pretty heavy shed, especially my male. My boy has a very heavy coat and, holy moley, have I been brushing him, vacuuming and anything I can think of for the past several weeks and I still have tumbleweeds of hair everywhere you look. Maybe it's the right time for yours to shed heavier, too.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

This sounds like an allergy. I would talk with your vet. My last lab had a lot of allergies, which manifested as skin issues. We got her on a strict diet (NO people food, just her food) and worked with a Veterinary Dermatologist that our vet recommended. He got her on several different daily meds along with some monthly shots. Keep in mind that Lily was a severe case-the worst our vet had seen in her career. I would definitely talk to your vet to see if they agree that it is allergies.

For the dull coat and flaky skin, it may also just be dryness. You could try adding fish oil or something like that, or consider changing foods, to help with their coats. What are you currently feeding?

We went through a lot with Macy's environmental allergies. She ended up at the derm vet and is on weekly immunotherapy injections.
We washed her bedding and removed all laundry chemicals . We removed all floor cleaners and just use vinegar and water. We wipe her down every day and she gets frequent baths with Cortisoothe Shampoo. That helped a lot. She gets salmon oil daily. We added a humidifier. All of these things helped give her relief. For Macy, it wasn't enough since she was diagnosed with a lot of environmental allergies. But maybe you will be lucky and one of them will give your pups relief.

Coat issues can also be thyroid problems. Talk to your vet.

Not to dismiss any of the ideas above, but, did you recently put the heat on in your house? Check your humidity levels. Proper levels might help the coat problems and certainly will benefit you, your electronics and your wooden furniture.
