    Food suggestion

Hello. I have a nutrition question since I'm outside of my comfort zone with one of my dogs. I bought a pair of brothers from a kennel 14 months ago. The silver lab (Cash) never has issues. Picture perfect healthy dog. His charcoal brother (Smoke) has not been so lucky. He's had 3 surgeries to remove rocks - Yes he eats rocks. PICA is the term used to describe this tendency. We had both dogs on Blue Buffalo as pups, but Smoke had diarrhea on this food. So we swapped over to Eukanuba chicken and rice. No problem. They ate it without any issues. Well since all the surgeries, and the fact he's been sick many times, Smoke refuses to eat the Eukanuba food now. I can mix it with Blue Buffalo, and he will eat fine. However we have the diarrhea issue. So my question is, what other high quality food is suggested? Some of the vets said Purina One Lamb/Rice. Google search seems that may not be a high quality food. I have quite a bit of money in these dogs, so I would like to provide the best meals I possibly can. Thanks in advance.

    Hi and welcome!

There are many great foods available, I would stay far away from Blue Buffalo though! I rotate through Orijen, Fromm, Earthborn, Acana, Wellness Core and Farmina, (all grain free), plus raw and home cooked.

You will get as many opinions on food as there are dogs, lol!

Purina One is fine, but if you want to go up a step in quality to something fairly equivalent to the Eukanuba, you could try Pro-Plan. They have several formulas, just stay away from the ones with “shreds” as they have tons of soy. The sensitive skin and stomach formulas might be good since your one dog has digestive issues, and my puppies are on the Sport 26-16 and doing well.

Thank you. The Pro Plan is available at the local shops.

I just buy my dogs' food locally also, but for more choices, many people on here use Dog and Cat Food, Treats, and Supplies | Free Shipping at Chewy.com

I've gone through obstruction surgery with both my dogs. Unfortunately they do not equate the act of eating stuff with the need for surgery. My 9 year old boy ate the end off a baby spoon last week, just when we thought he'd gotten over that bad behavior. The vigilance never ends for some dogs.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

I would probably go with Pro Plan Sensitive.

Like others said Blue buffalo is not as high quality as their adds make you think it is.

I personally prefer Fromm Food or Pro Plan for quality. Finding the perfect food your your dogs can really lead you down quite the rabbit hole. I would look at a couple of the high end foods and go from there.

We use Earthborn Holistic, Fromm, and Merrick. All grain free, but that's because my boy has yeast problems. Also consider a sensitivity with the main protein. Maverick HATES lamb and gets the runs and isn't crazy about turkey. He really likes rabbit, duck, beef, and bison. Maybe trying a food with a different protein would entice him as well.

Would try Pro plan sensitive skin and stomach or purina one lamb and rice . Majority of the time Max eats PP sensitive skin and stomach , picked up a bag of purina beyond ( fish formula ) the other day for him

good luck , hope all goes well
