In other Hoku / food news

This morning, I stayed up in bed for a bit, reading.

I came downstairs around 8:00 (?) and was greeted by Hoku. I asked "has she been fed?" because often (not always, but often) I am the one to feed her in the morning.

"Well, yes... and no. She didn't eat anything."

    Wait. What?

So I found out that her breakfast was made just as usual (kibble, some blueberries and chopped apple, a bit of yam, sprinkle of spirulina), and she just... stared at it. Wouldn't touch it. It sat for half an hour, so my husband threw it out.

I ask if she's otherwise acting normally (but obviously she is). I ask if there is any way she could have swallowed a sock or something. Anything. He doesn't think so. I am wondering if her new microchip could have her feeling under the weather—but she was fine last night, ate dinner normally.

I'm about to call the Vet. I'm wondering if maybe she has put herself on a diet after the Vet's comments about her weight (I'm joking about that... but I was about to call the Vet, and I was in fact worried).

I give her a little lamb lung. She eats it eagerly. Hm. I take out a handful of kibble to see if she'll eat it from my hand. He happily eats it, piece by piece.

I get up and make her a little kibble in a bowl (blueberries, warm water). Put it in her bowl, sitting next to it. She comes up cautiously. I give her some. She begins to eat. She eats more. She finishes it.

I do that again, so she gets her regular breakfast amount. She happily eats it now, as long as I am sitting down with her.

She's clearly physically fine. It was psychological. She didn't want to eat until I was downstairs with her, or until I had fed her. I'm not sure if it's that she was worried about me (which is silly; she sleeps in our room and was up in bed w/ us this morning), or if she just wanted me to give her breakfast. But it was quite amusing.

Interesting. Good idea to try different things before panicking. I would have taken my dogs to the e-vet immediately. Out of all of my Labs, only one meal has ever been missed, regardless of who fed it. He ate a giant two lb loaf of zucchini bread off the counter and was in serious pain over it, laying on the floor, moaning. You'd think he was about to give birth. He projectile vomited and felt better immediately.

I'm glad I didn't panic. I was on the verge of panicking.

But Hoku isn't really food motivated. I mean, she eats happily. Trains well w/ high-value treats (I use only pure meat for training). But she doesn't beg and isn't a crumb-vacuum. Last night we had latkes out on the coffee table, and that *did* get her interest. She was fine moving on, but after a few minutes it was clear that she really wouldn't mind just... one... latke, so we put them up on the dining room table.

So, although it was a concern—it sure got my attention—she's not a food-motivated Lab (I know, I know, this sounds crazy), so maybe it's not as weird as it sounds.

Of course I am keeping an eye on her. But I really do think it was psychological, not physical in nature. She's a sensitive little girl!

That's not good. She has to eat when you aren't there. You have a job, a child, a life, there are going to be times someone besides you has to feed her. Me, if it happens again, missed meal for you missy.

Oh, she usually does (take food from others). Sometimes my husband feeds her breakfast or dinner. This is the first time there's been any issue. vNot sure why.

If it seems like pickiness that is ongoing, I'd just let her be hungry. I don't think that was it. And because of the Vet visit yesterday, I needed to see if she would eat, or if there was something serious going on. If she had not eaten from me, I'd be at the Vet now. I just needed to see if there was a medical issue going on, or something else.

Reminds me of my dachshund. She won't poop unless I am the one taking her out. Drives me crazy!!!

This is really bad and I am well aware I am a sucker but let me tell you about my Emma!

Food must be fresh to begin with. I will rarely add canned to kibble but if it was in the refrigerator she won't eat it. Same with green beans and she still picks them out and eats them one by one. If they are eating kibble I can only add a certain amount of water or she will not eat it. She is not a fan of most raw foods and I do not push that. On top of all her food nonsense I have to sit next to her, with a cat in my lap, to get her to eat. I am aware it is ridiculous and I should not do it. She is an old lady now and it is what it is!

Maverick is the same. He prefers to eat his meals with me next to him. I can't just prepare his meal and continue getting ready for work....I have to be visible. Just in the morning though. I feed him in the morning and DH feeds him at night. It's funny the patterns they get into.

I would just be sure that she has a cue word, like "okay" to release her to eat, and that all of your family members feed her.

One of my friends watched my dogs for a couple of days, they would not eat for her, so she called me, I asked if she released them to eat like I told her, she hadn't. They ate fine for her after she did that. :-)

LOL, I am still wondering why breakfast got tossed? I would put it in the fridge and offered it later.
