What did your breeder feed? Is your dog having any issues with the food you are feeding? Why do you want to change?

There are scores of different brands of food available and everyone here will tell you differently. So, a bit more detail would be helpful.

what did your breeder recommend and what is your pup eating now?

Personally i prefer Proplan for puppies until about 8 to 10 months and then as they get older, i rotate foods and feed some cooked foods

Same questions as the others... what is the puppy on now from the breeder, or wherever you are getting him/her, and why are you thinking of changing?

When we first got our dog, I had done a whole bunch of research about dog food (some of it was a bit misleading) and thought that what our breeder had him on was a "crappy" dog food to say the least, so I finished the small stash she gave us and then transitioned him to a Eukanuba puppy food and that was a big mistake. A) he didn't tolerate the switch well and had terrible stools on it for a while, and b) shortly after we switched to it, they ended up in a recall and we couldn't find it for a while and had to switch to another food again. This put us on what everyone around here calls the "dog food rollercoaster". You do not want to be on this... it's a lot of trial and error trying to find a food that you pup does well on.

I would say, while introducing the puppy to your home, if he/she is doing well on what he/she is on now, then keep it that way at least for a while. It's a stressful time for the dog to begin with, and you don't want to add the change in food and end up with GI issues on top of all that.

As the others mentioned, you're going to get a lot of different opinions on here based on what you posted in your original post, if you could provide a little more info, that'd be helpful! :-)

Are you getting a puppy??? I think they offer some of the best healing for a broken heart. Congrats if you're looking into it! As for food, I'd feed what the breeder has him on. They feed that food for a reason and the puppies already go thru so many changes that food seems trivial when they finally get to your loving arms.

We are getting a sweet puppy that was born in January. I believe the breeder mentioned she will transition them to kibbles after weaning them from nursing. He will be 8 weeks old when we fly to get him.

We were just looking into other options beside the store bought foods. Not sure if it is any better than the specialty ordered food, so thought I'd reach out and ask for suggestions.

Yes we are!!! We actually found the bloodline of our lab that we lost in January and are beyond excited to bring this sweet pup home. We are going literally across the US to get him and it can't get here soon enough lol! Thank you for your kind words! After the loss of our precious dog, we've had to remind ourselves that God has a purpose in everything. Perhaps his purpose in this was now we get to provide another pup with the same love.

    Very excited!

I'm so happy for you for the prospective arrival! You must feel strongly that you've got a breeder you like and trust if you're going to travel so far to pick the puppy up so I'd trust them to know what works best for their dogs. It seems like many breeders use pretty commonly found foods, usually not the high end (meaning expensive), grain-free, fancy-schmancy foods that looks good on paper. Why don't you call or email the breeder and find out what kind of kibble she uses. Then you can come back and let us convince you to stick with that for a while before switching to something else. If it's really poor quality food, someone will no doubt offer that opinion as well.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Congrats on the new pup. I would expect that they are a competent breeder who's done all appropriate clearances, especially since you are flying across the country to get the pup. They know their dogs, and should have them on food that they know the pups will do well on. I'd go with what the breeder recommends.
