Thanks Annette for the suggestions. I never planned on keeping Sam on the prescription food long term. I was only sharing that it does work. Sam has been on Pro Plan most of the time and even the Focus large breed formula we fed is almost 400 calories a cup. I tried him on Fromm and while he was on Fromm he had two bad hotspots. They may not have been food related but I didn't want to take a chance. I was actually looking into the Royal Canin or Eukanuba Labrador formulas and was leaning more towards Royal Canin. I have never seen Annamaet around here although the store I shop at has Eagle Pack reduced fat. I have some time to figure it out.

I gotta say, reading this thread I'm jealous. I wish I could keep weigh on Piper. With her IBD every day I think about food and hope some of it will stick to her. Plus, she loves food and she can't eat anything anymore. It makes me sad for her.

That is hard. My trainer’s 10 year old border collie was recently diagnosed with IBD and they are having a hard time finding anything she can/will tolerate.

We liked the Royal Canin Lab formula quite a bit - Scully was on it for the last 9-10 years of her life (she lived to 15). They had started on Pro-Plan but were able to eat more of the Royal Canin, as it was lower calorie. We only switched Mulder off of it in his senior years when he developed an intolerance to chicken which is when we tried the Taste of the Wild. Chloe tends to maintain her weight better on grain-free for some reason, so that’s why we have her on the Annamaet. Grain vs. grain free didn’t make a difference for the other ones. It can be so idiosyncratic how different dogs react to different foods.

I'm happy you were able to get Sam's weight down, I know that's been a struggle. Sam may not thank you for it, but he should!

No, I feed more in the winter months as well. Thats when we are most active. Its 100 plus degrees here in Nevada all summer with temps that can reach 115 to 120. We stay inside unless we get out to the lake which is about a hour away. The romp around the yard early in the morning and late at night for a few minutes but thats it. The dogs have no desire to be outside in the extreme heat. My husband says they hibernate for the summer

Anyway, to the OP, Zoey has a horrible metabolism, she tends to thicken up easily if i am not very careful with her. She has been on multiple types of foods, from average foods to what people consider premium, grain and grain free and she does best on the grain free Natures Domain foods from Costco, particularly the turkey and sweet potato. For some reason like Anettes Chloe, Zoey does better on grain free foods. She eats about a cup twice a day and also gets treats, table scraps and still maintains her weight at about 65 pounds. Plus side, it also keeps my corgi thin without any effort on my part. I do prefer to keep mine at a stable, thinner weight. I weigh them often so I can catch any fluctuations. Slimmer dogs live longer, suffer less joint issues, etc.

Good job on getting Sam's weight down. Now tell the vet to quit bugging you lol j/k. Charlie has maintained his weight (75 lbs) on Holistic Select Anchovy and Sardine meal ( there is a grain free version too). It has lower calories than Proplan.
