I have one literature search here from a PhD candidate showing MSM helps protect against roundworms and giardia too if I am remembering correctly.

With 7-8 dogs (and puppies at times), I think it's silly not to do all we can to prevent issues. Money is not a consideration here because I think it's $ well spent to have a good preventative program in place early on.

Taking the 2yo for OFAs tomorrow. I sure wish more folks would do that too but I'm just wishing and dreaming there... imo, it's a couple hundred $ well spent to know what you are dealing with early on. Perhaps it'd be a good plan to buy pet insurance thru age 2 at least when you can clear the hip and elbow hurdle at least. Obviously some lines are still at risk for CCL issues but it's what I'm suggesting to puppy buyers now and may do myself in the future too.
Nice info! Do you have a link on the research regarding MSM and giardia? And do you think that adding that in after a bout of giardia will continue to help or is it something that should be done during first diagnosis? And when you OFA your dogs, do you do it with anesthesia or awake? Is it difficult to get your vet to do them or do you go to a specialist?

Also, thanks everyone for the great tips regarding all supplements!

Woohooo, found it again online!!! I had not copied off all the references at the time. https://www.altmedrev.com/publications/7/1/22.pdf Anyhow, w/ regard to giardia (see p 30, paragraph 2): "MSM has been reported to be active in vivo and in vitro against Giardia, Trichomonas, and round worms, where MSM may be competing for binding sites at the mucous membrane, blocking interface between host and parasite. (81)

I was personally interested since I had battled SLE (systemic lupus) for years, and in ~1999, had started taking MSM along side my one lab who had HD. Mollie was remarkably better, flipping and spinning for her food w/in 5-7 days of starting it, and voila... my lupus started really improving, to the point of it being in remission now for years. What I also noticed was my spring time pollen allergies were so minor I no longer needed Clariton or Zyrtec (prescription at the time). I attributed all this to the MSM, and so when I saw this lit review online, I actually emailed Parcell and had a great conversation about what I noted in my dogs as well as in me.

In the abstract, it says "MSM may be effective for the treatment of allergy, pain syndromes, athletic injuries, and bladder disorders. " Also mentioned is fibromyalgia, which seems to be similar to lupus, so..... that's why i've continued to take it in part, and why I give to my dogs starting so young. So far, have to say I've only had giardia once in 21 yrs and rarely have roundworms show in fecals (knock on wood).

As for OFAs, I have tried in the past to do w/o sedation but have not been real happy w/ positioning. Domitor has been needed... we'll see how Kanzi does tomorrow am. I've had the same vet do mine since 2001 and he does most of my repro stuff too. Very good w/ the dogs, and I'd use that clinic all the time if they were just a bit closer but it's a 30 min/ 30 mile drive. They are doing more and more of my general stuff as prices continue to rise at my local clinic... for instance, I think Envy's toe amputation last Aug (she lost a nail and had bone damage due to a rattlesnake bite a few years ago) was ~$400 and that was with several xrays and even cool photos of the surgery. I am pretty sure it'd have been at least 25-30% more at my regular vet and I probably wouldn't have gotten all the extras. Just a neat clinic... and they let me back in xray for my OFAs if I want too. Anne

And it could be that the compensation due to knee issues caused more stress on the hips. That's just how joint issues work. I'm guessing more environmental in that case vs genetic if good at age 4, but agree that muscling/ conditioning helps to a degree (as long as we are not over doing the jumping that is!). Been breeding 21 yrs now, and have seen no dramatic changes in good to excellent hips here even w/ my dogs who have done agility.
The x-rays were done at the University clinic because I asked them to (for my own peace of mind) when Cookie was sedated anyway for x-rays of his knees. They told me then that his hips were excellent. I was surprised too when I learned, 4 years later, that his hips were dysplastic due to development of bone spurs. But he practically has developed them everywhere, spine, knees, hips, elbows... and the only major injury he had was when he was hit by a car last year, which caused the right hip luxation. But the process had begun much before that. All vets told me, including our physiotherapist, that it's genetic. The muscle tone kept him active and symptom-free all those years.

I sure never heard of that before! IOW, true hip dysplasia is a developmental thing that happens in those first 18 mos or so before growth plate closure. Dysplasia = "bad fit". Typically we are talking about growth related irregularities-- this sounds like an outside cause in your case.

One less for Glucosamine here! Kanzi's xrays looked beautiful this am. I was in and out (no sedation req'd) in ~20 minutes! $165 total. Always a relief to get those done imo.

I am not a breeder and maybe my opinion does not really matter. The Hylasport is not very expensive, everything else is human grade and I just throw them in with their dinner. In my opinion the cost is nominal and if I spare or lighten Maxx the pain Emma has It is worth a 1000 times the little I spent on it! I love that there are breeders doing this proactively!
