Lays down to eat and drink.

Is this anything to worry about? One person said this can cause bloat, which can be deadly. Any thoughts? thanks.

If you're concerned then purchase a raised bowl stand.

It's undecided if eating positions contribute to bloat.

I agree with the raised bowl stand. I always fed my bigger dogs raised...even Sunnie (she's only 42 lbs.) refuses to eat off the floor and wants me to hold her bowl unless it's on a stand (Dan prefers the floor). I'm in the camp that considers raising the bowl to be a guard against bloat (as would lying down while eating, most likely). My Akitas proved to me that there was less air swallowed when the food didn't have to travel upwards to get to the stomach...one tiny little burp instead of more.

Bruce would lay down to drink, but ate standing up. Never had any issues from it, but I never really figured out why he did it.

My breeder advised me to soak their food overnight... let it bloat in bowl. Sophie has a divided bowl. Amie eats slowly in stages. I have been doing that. Also I have read that the less grain in dry kibble the better. Anyone know what is whole grain sorghum? Is that plant base ? Is it like a grain? Per say?

    Thanks,
    Zoo...

Mulder used to lay down to drink when he was hot and thirsty - like after coming in from playing fetch. We figured he was just lazy, LOL.

I never really understood why he did it, he'd take a lick of two standing, then plop down and finish his drink. Did it from the time he was a baby.

Same, mine only does it when she drinks and is hot and tired.
