    reports about Purina

I am very concerned and upset about all the negative reports about Purina foods....BEWARE--there is a class action suit about their Beneful--reports of many dog deaths...!!!---
Also all the Purina foods apparently have grains outsourced to CHINA...NOT GOOD!
So what can we safely feed our doggies????
My 2 year old has been itching alot lately and I don't know what or if to switch foods. He has been on Purina Pro Plan his whole life. Anyone use Nutro?
Any suggestions for food or any other treatment for all the itching???
    So confusing.

I won't comment on the food but as to the itching, allergy season is starting up, for dogs and people. Environmental allergies are a more common cause of itching in dogs than food so you might be doing no good to switch food. If it is food then is it a protein? Or a filler? Or some other ingredient that he is reacting to? Consider finding the cause of the itch first, with allergy testing.

Pro Plan is Purina's top of the line food. I don't believe there has every been a recall on it.

    Which variety are your feeding?

I am not thinking environmental allergy since this has been an on going problem for a long time, just seems to be getting worse...
Tried an oatmeal bath the other day, but it actually seems even worse! But no problems with his skin or coat--both are good!

We feed the Large Breed Pro Plan chicken and rice....
Purina has not "recalled" their Beneful, but there is a class action suit because of all the deaths...which totally dissapoints me that Purina is not concerned. Guess business is business...
These companies change formulas without any notice to consumers---so how are we to make any decisions??
Our 2 other labs lived both to 14 on Purina, but I am sure the formula has changes many times over!
    Anyone using Nutro?

Pro-Plan has not had many recalls but ALL major dog food manufacturers (and many minor ones) have had recalls.
Rather than trusting that a particular company will never have recalls, IMO it's better to pick a good food and then
stay advised about which foods are being recalled.

Dog Food Advisor rates brands of dog foods as to quality; for evaluations and recommendations of healthy dog foods, see

Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor

    As for never being recalled:

March 10, 2016 — Nestle Purina has announced it is voluntarily recalling select lots of its Beneful and Purina Pro Plan wet dog foods because they may not contain the recommended level of vitamins and minerals.
Purina discovered through its own testing that the affected dog foods did not contain the recommended level of vitamins and minerals and voluntarily recalled the product.

I'm not worried about Pro Plan. Beneful is the LOW END of their line. Doesn't mean all of the Purina foods are bad. I also don't put any weight on dogfoodadvisor.com ... it's run by a human dentist that evaluates individual ingredients. I use what works for my dogs and what folks that are in dog shows feed.

I had a dog with seasonal allergies. They tend to start their second year and get worse each year. Many human products such as Claritan can be used, but the dosage is very different for dogs.
Talk to your vet before you start changing food as that can create never ending problems in itself.

Also wanted to state that if you switch, Nutro is IMHO going down a step. I get wanting to feed better. I have one that eats Evangers. To the tune of anywhere from $70-$80 for a 30# bag.
