    Food for Skin Issues

My dog has severe skin issues (rashes on his underbelly and his paws are usually being licked). Does anyone have a food recommendation? He doesn't do so well with heavy ingredient foods.

    Any recommendations would be great.

This time of the year I would bet its environmental. Wash bedding in Oxyclean and better yet get a Kuranda bed. These beds don't harbor mites and are easy to clean. You can also use witch hazel to clean the skin or diluted vinegar. In Florida, make sure your stuff for fleas is actually working. Some have lost their effectiveness in some parts of the country.

In terms of food, the best dry food on the market is Abady, either Classic M&S or M&S, the latter is a bit more expensive. It is not kibble, it is a lightly processed granular food like coarse sand. It has great protein, very low carbs and great fat that is not just sprayed on the outside like kibble. Its very easy to digest because the dog does not have to process large very hard kibbles.

What is your dog eating now and what do you mean by "heavy ingredient foods"? Are you using any supplements or allergy meds?

I agree with wiping/rinsing the feet after outside time. I do not think there is one food that is necessarily the best food for every dog. You may need to try several brands/proteins to figure out what works. If you want to feed kibble I really like Orijen or Acana and if I were only going to feed one kibble it would be one of these.

    Belly and feet....beach.......

My mother's one Basenji was allergic to sand fleas....had to have her belly and feet washed off after every walk, not just those actually on sand.

    Just a thought...

What does your Vet say? I assume you have Vetted for this if it's "severe" Most Vets have Rx foods for skin issues. I have the same questions as Maxx&Emma, how do you know food is the culprit and what do you mean by "heavy ingredient foods?" Have you tried supplements, allergy meds, even an OTC antihistamine?

FWIW my dog is eating a Rx food for another issue but it seems to have stopped his itching. It is marketed as a food for dogs with intolerances. This is the Canadian website, U.S. ingredients might be different.

ETA: My dog is also being treated with TCM for his other issues, there's no way to know how much TCM is also helping the skin, along with the food.

The best and wise practice to avoid this issue is to keep the surroundings neat and clean. Regularly wash everything as it might be the cause of your dog's skin issue, there some allergens that thrive in fabrics. If you have a clean surroundings already but still having the same problem, you might think that switching to dog food for allergy is the last resort. But no, try taking advantage of the benefits of using virgin coconut oil first. It has more than a hundred benefits to both animals and human. If coconut oil didn't work (which has a 1% possibility), then find a food that suits your dog's health condition.

Make sure nothing you feed has chicken in it. A lot of brands hide it in there. We feed Evangers Meat Lovers Medley, NO CHICKEN. It's an easy thing to try.

I used ProPlan Salmon for Montana who had crazy skin issues. I gave him grain free|chicken free food and he felt much better.
