Many Vets are having a very hard time, so I really tend to give them the benefit of the doubt most of the time.

That is very sad. Over the years two of my Vets have been clear favourites and both retired early. Both were quick to offer cheaper alternatives, suggest even remedies they themselves did not sell. Suck as cooking my own recovery diet of ground meat and rice instead of buying their canned gastro food. Both waived or reduced fees several times. Another, not our Vet for a long time but she is also my neighbour, was crying one day when I walked in because a farmer had brought in a puppy born blind to be PTS. Nobody wanted it and on a farm it was likely to meet grievous harm or death so he brought it in to be put down. It's a tough occupation.

like them telling me my dog is fat, or that I need to do certain vaccines like bordatella, or they wont give me script to use for mail order meds, or a lot of things I think are unnecessary...

I feed the dog food that my dog likes and doesn't aggravate his IBD. That food is Zignature. They must be doing something right as it's the ONLY dog food we've tried that agrees with him.

The older vet in our practice has been carefully non-prescriptive regarding foods other than to say it's OK to switch a youngster to adult food or perhaps a change of proteins would help some situation. One of the younger vets, I asked what she feeds her dog, a lab mix. She said in Vet school they were given free Science Diet to feed their own pets. Her dog lived to the age of 15 on it so when she got her current dog, she just put him/her on SD because it had worked well for her previous dog. That was probably 20 years go for vet school and either there wasn't the focus on nutrition then or she decided to stick with what was working for her. None of the vets there have ever pushed any brand of food in the absence of medical need although I do see people coming in to pick up food so they do sell some.

None of the vets at our practice has ever really mentioned food other than once or twice to ask what we were feeding (and say it was fine). The only food they sell there is prescription, anyway (mostly Royal Canin but some Science Diet as well).
