Are ears or tracheas considered safer than giving them rawhide retriever rolls or rawhide chips?
I had a bad experience with a pig ear. My Toby became very sick...he has a bad case of gastroenteritis.
My Vet told me that are very greasy and probably are not the best thing to give your dog on a regular basis.
So...never again for us!
And I also agree to check the labels on any treats you buy...nothing from China!

Totally depends on what you consider "safe", or "safer". :-)
I like beef trachea because they take a while to chew, and have natural glucosamine and chondroitin. As long as I know they are sourced and processed in the USA, I feel safe as far as that. I don't allow them when I cannot supervise, but I haven't seen them as a choking hazard, at least not here. My girls get a 4-5" piece of trachea on grooming day after nails and their once over, helps keep teeth clean too.
I also give rawhide (flip chips), although very sparingly, and usually just to teething puppies, and of course American sourced and processed, and only under strict supervision. Flip chips help satisfy chewing puppies with loose teeth, and help prevent retention of deciduous teeth. Retriever rolls are more dangerous (they unravel) in my opinion, and are too big for puppies, so I don't buy them at all.
Clear as mud Sue? :-)

Sometimes I give them this kind of treats and I think there's nothing wrong using pig ears as their treat, but 3 of my dogs mostly like this dried beef liver dog treats I think because this is the first treat that they receive from me.
Pigs ears, chicken or duck feet, lamb or beef lung are our dogs favorite treats. They also love dried fish skin treats but those are very pricey!
