If there is a lot of marrow in the bone you may want to scoop some out, as it's very rich and can cause the runs. Keep and eye on him while he's chewing it, some dogs have cracked teeth while chewing.

Kinda like what dog food to feed?, you'll get different opinions, here's my experience;
local butcher sells smoked dog bones, I get Rocco one very couple weeks, then I hear I should only feed raw, the smoking process like cooking softens the bone, then it's watch so they don't break a tooth gnawing on it, but I want one that's harder? ??
So I get a raw bone and Rocco stares at it and says "what's that? I'm not eating that". I laugh…he's used to smoked.
So for me I'll stay with what he's used to and watch if/when he chews off pieces, pick it up and throw it away.
There is no "one size fits all" answers, only suggestions and experiences.

Only know I don't give bones to seniors, or at least the ones I've had. Two experienced slab fractures of molars. In fact, I don't give antlers either. Both the vendors of these products and the vet did not recommend them for older dogs.

What kind of bone did you get Packer? Since people have had varied experiences I think it's best to closely supervise with bones. For Oban the smoked ones are out, I tried two and could see how they splintered. I've never had a dog react to marrow. We fed the childhood dog cooked bones, large bones, marrow bones and the only thing that happened was by age 16 his teeth were pretty worn down. I've always fed bones for recreational chewing and when I fed raw bones were a necessary component of the diet. Now I heed the cautions, never know when one is going to hit me, and am careful with very large weight bearing bones.

agree. I would never give a dog antlers, those things are like a rock.

We give Thor the large raw marrow bones. He'll tear off any soft tissue and membrane on the outside and then use his tongue to get out the marrow inside. We freeze them so he doesn't eat too much marrow at a time and it can keep him entertained for hours.

Also, we only give him the large full femur bones. Our butcher also sells smaller cut up marrow bones, but I've found that Thor will try to chew up (and swallow) the actual bone when they are smaller cuts. With the larger cuts he doesn't chew the bone, he focuses on getting out the marrow.

We gave him one last night when we went out to dinner - jumping for joy at the sight of his treat!
