    Ph Balancer for Dogs

    Hi There-

We just got grass and I have been warned about the girls urine burning the grass.. Does anyone have any favorite brands that they could recommend for the Ph Balancer little tablets?

I would not give a PH balancer to my dog.

You can hose off the area with water right after they go...that will help a lot. Or you can designate one area in your yard for them..maybe put crushed stone down in that area for them to go on.

Other than giving crancaps to affect the pH of urine for dogs prone to urinary issues, I wouldn't do anything. Crancaps will acidify the urine to help alleviate those problems.

Unless you feed your dog too high a protein, her urine output shouldn't contain excess....nitrogen, I think...that will burn the grass.

I've had a bunch of dogs in my relatively long life and have never had one whose urine burned plant tissue.

Thank you guys! I will see how things go and hope that it doesn't affect the grass too much! :]

My girl dogs didn't burn the grass at all. It won't/shouldn't unless they pee in the same spot over and over. We get this in the winter from Oban, male, who pees up against the snowbanks in the same place for months. I guess it does depend partly on how big your yard is, maybe they'll have to re-use the same place often?

Years ago when Bandit joined us I asked his breeder why she had no pee burn spots in any of her dog yards with 6 dogs. I was more thinking about the fact that Bandit would be our first boy and him peeing on flowers. She told me she gave her dogs 500 mg of human grade vitamin C in chewable tablet form. Even along the fence lines, no pee spots, anywhere. That's when I started doing the same and it really worked to reduce the burn spots. Plus, it's not a bad supplement for them to have. It was also suggested to me that when the dogs get to 10 or so, I could up to 1000 mg (500 mg twice a day).

I'm also giving our GSD, Archie, vitamin C but it does not seem to work quite as well. Ran out of vitamin C a little while ago and can see a difference in the intensity of the burn spots. Also, with seniors, during the snowy season DH will plow a trail for them to make moving around easier and consequently their pee spots were more concentrated, thus a little more effect on the grass. Just toss the tablet into a meal and down it goes.

Showshoe- They have a large area to use the restroom its not one concentrated area and its large. I guess immediately when people told me about it I thought shoot! are they going to run the weeks of work we just did?! Just wanted to prevent it from happening and people told me about the chewable tablets you can get at pet stores. I immediately knew to come here and double check! Thanks for all the kind words!

I've not had an issue with the girls causing grass issue, it's always been the boys.
