    Pro Plan gets poor ratings

Overall, Purina Pro Plan is a dog food that contains many cheap ingredients and has very little actual nutritional value in comparison with many dog foods touted as premium, and is not recommended for most dogs. Only gets a 2.0 - 2.5 out of 5 rating by most sites.

This was a shock to me because I've been using it for years!

If it were as bad as that suggests, it's hard to understand how canine athletes thrive on it. Coat, muscle definition, stamina, general health. A LOT very fine field champions and Master National finalists eat Pro-Plan. Many pro trainers use it when they'd do nothing that would diminish their dogs' performance and health.

Given the millions of dogs on Pro-plan, if there was a significant deficiency in it, there ought to be a raft of data pointing in that direction. I'm not a nutritionist and/or (practicing) biochemist and neither am I a vet. For that reason, I'm willing to stipulate that there are likely foods that are better around the margins. At the same time I see no compelling reason the stop feeding Pro plan. (And, how much do the niche or boutique dog food companies contribute to canine competitions, either show or performance? Purina's sponsorships of these events move the needle for me. Eukanuba is another corporate sponsor. I think some of their food was sadly part of the Chinese additives scandal that saw a lot of dogs die. I think all the big corporations learned a lesson that was tragic for the dogs and cats affected.)

Gets poor ratings where? The ridiculous dog food advisor site run by a human dentist, competitor's site? Not that it matters.

Just feed what works for your dog, if Pro Plan is working and your dog is healthy, count yourself lucky.

fortunately folks who work and show their dogs know better than to listen to the dentist.

My dogs do great on Pro Plan!

Here's Jagger and the non-lab, Wrigley!

Dude! I'm glad you told us the second one was a non-lab. I was about to tell you that dog is having a seriously bad idiosyncratic reaction to Pro plan.

What works for one, something different for another. That's why there is such competition in the dog food market. Best to find what works for your dog and run with it. Been on the kibble rollercoaster and NEVER want to ride it again.
