It's always a good idea to have a first aid kit onhand for your dog. I carry a basic first aid kit in my car, and I have the same supplies at home in case of emergencies.
Please feel free to add any additional items you've found useful to this basic list:
- Canine First Aid Guide (please study in advance so you can react confidently in an emergency!)
- Roll cotton
- Cotton balls
- Gauze pads
- Gauze tape
- Hydrogen peroxide (check the expiration date)
- Hydrocortisone ointment
- Scissors
- Eyewash
- Silver nitrate
- Tweezers
- Oral syringes
- Pediolyte ® or other balanced electrolyte fluid
- Simethicone (i.e. GasX for bloat)
- Baby food – meat flavors work best
- Large towel
- Exam gloves
- 1 inch white tape (in addition to gauze tape)
- Rolls of elastic wrap
- Emergency ice pack
- Thermometer (both oral and rectal thermometers can be used rectally)
- Benadryl (for bites/stings/allergic reactions. Check with your vet for proper dosage)
- EMT Gel
- anti-septic gel/cream for dogs
- liquid bandage (the one from petsmart has a bitter taste to it)
- q-tips to apply the cream in small, hard to reach areas (like in between the paw pads)
- a blanket or towel for the dog's comfort or even to prevent blood from getting all over your car
- treats to reward the dog for behaving while applying painful anti-septic
- a gallon of water and a baggy of food
- Phone numbers for your veterinarian or local emergency clinics (if travelling)
