Also we live in an apartment. Not to sure if its a good idea to have him in the crate while we are gone. I have a feeling my neighboors wont like it too much with him barking.

My name is Maryann and my daughter Sarah just graduated college and moved back home :). We decided to adopt a yellow lab from a no-kill shelter near us. We already have a 13 1/2 year old black cocker that we adopted seven years ago. The cocker was named Sarah, but since that is my daughter's name we ended up calling her Tookie. The yellow lab (Rock) was given up at the age of 11, which is so sad. He is a sweet boy who loves his tennis balls. The shelter said he weighed 80 lbs. The two seemed to get along ok when we visited a couple times at the shelter. Yesterday, Rock's first day home, there was a little growling on Tookie's part, but not too bad. The weirdest thing, which we never expected, was that Rock seems to be afraid of the stairs (maybe he never had stairs before?). I've read the threads dealing with that, and we are being patient. Hopefully he will be able to join us soon in the rest of the house. We have a raised ranch style of house and he is stuck in the middle for now, on the landing. Yesterday, Sarah did get him up and down twice, but today we've only gotten him halfway down the one time. He is such a good and sweet dog, we are glad we decided to bring him home and we feel we'll get past this. By the way, they did x-ray him at the shelter and found no signs of dysplasia. His walking seems fine.

I look forward to the discussions in the forums!

I hate having to consider this, but we're on a TIGHT budget for at least the next 6 or so months, and I may have to switch foods. I've cut stuff for us over the last several months and have managed to keep the dogs on Wellness Core Ocean (Ruby) and Fromm (Cosmo), but between those foods ($67 and $62 for big bags), Hylasport, allergy meds during spring/summer it's becoming a struggle. :( Ruby does really well on Core, and Cosmo is pretty good on Fromm, not perfect, which has been helped somewhat with the addition of Fido Vite. Anyway, I'm looking at possibly TOTW or Nutrisource GF for Ruby, and NV Prairie or possibly one of the grain Nutrisource formulas. All of those are significantly cheaper for me, and it looks like I would feed a little less than Fromm based on kcal/cup. Quality wise, do you guys think these are similar? I wouldn't mind finding foods to rotate with anyway, and unfortunately now price is a consideration. Any other suggestions that I'm not thinking of? In the past I've tried Natural Balance and California Natural and those are no go's around here. :)

...without even knowing that they are.

I've been feeling rather overwhelmed with the end of the school year, working two jobs, multiple classes throughout the week, yard work, house work, keeping to other deadlines, trying to get myself motivated to lose some weight, etc.

I know that it always manages to get done. I know that in a few short weeks I won't feel as overwhelmed, but it doesn't always make the "now" any easier. I try to relax and rationally think things through- telling myself that everyone feels like this at times, yada yada. And while I do know that I'm not the only one with pressures and that it will get accomplished, I involve myself so deeply in everything that I just won't be able to relax until it is all complete.

And then I see this face.... I do greatly appreciate him tonight. Without kids of my own, he's my baby. He is what keeps me from falling apart sometimes. And while I know you've got your own pretty faces to look into, I couldn't help but share yet another picture of the one sweet soul who seems to think more about me than anyone else....
She lived a good life, but was having medical problems that really effected the quality of her life. Today was the day, and he, his, wife, and two sons are pretty upset about it, rightly so. They also have another dog, that has been with the dog they lost this morning for 7 years, and they're worried about how he'll take it. I have no experience with this, and I was wondering what advice I could give him to help his remaining dog get through this. Thanks for any help.

Following my thread earlier today, Dirty Teeth, I decided I'm going to start supplementing some Daisy's meals with RAW. We're not ready for full on RAW at this time but we hope to get there one day.

Anyway, on my way home from work today I came across a hispanic supermarket so I thought it would be a good idea to take a peek at their meat department. OMG, they had SO many meats! You definitely don't find chicken feet (ew!) at Publix. I found a nice big 10lb bag of chicken quarters for .69 cents a pound. Not sure if that is cheap/expensive but it seemed reasonable so I bought it. I took it home, rinsed it really well and stored it individual baggies for future meals.

Gave Daisy her first raw meal just a little while ago. She licked it for the first 45 minutes until I finally decided to help her. I held it up for her for a little bit for her to get the hang out of it. She is so funny, she kept trying to daintily pull little chunks off but once she got going she gobbled it up in a few minutes. So hopefully all goes well and one day we can do this full time, for now I just want to get her teeth less gunky!

So I think Hershey has another uti. This morning she was whining in her crate, which is so unlike her. When I let her out she took off running toward the door like she was going to explode. In fact, she was even nosing the sliding door she wanted out so badly and I wasn't fast enough. When she went out she peed a river. Then she just kept pacing and squatting over and over. I had to drag her back inside to eat. Then she just wanted out again and again. I called the vet and we're going in tomorrow. She's due for her annual check up so we will do that too. I don't want to just drop off a urine sample and have them give me a prescription because this will be uti #2 in about six months and I want someone to actually check her out. We did the drop off method last time and it took 3 rounds of antibiotics to get her cleared up. I'd like to figure out what's going on with her. She didn't have any accidents in her crate today, so I guess that's good, but she was bursting when I got home. I'm trying to think of anything that could be causing this. I had been giving her bottled water after her last uti just in case, and she was at my parents house for 4 days this past weekend and they just gave tap water. Could that do it? I dunno. I have been transitioning her to NutriSource for the past three weeks but I'm thinking it's not the food since she was eating TOTW when she got the last one. I was going to try her on Earthborn but now I think I'll wait to change anything until we get this figured out. Do you think I need to hold off on the switch?

Any advice on this one? Questions I should ask the vet?
ugh, I wish she could just talk and tell me what's up.

6 weeks of cephalexin?

So some of you may remember my threads about Charlie's chin acne. I mentioned in one of the threads that we saw the vet last week (so 10 days ago) and he feels the only way to get rid of this bothersome acne is to do a 6 week course of cephalexin. The most Charlie has done is 3 weeks. (at the 3 week mark the acne is gone, but eventually comes back sometimes not for several months). The last time I only did 2 weeks of antibiotics and the acne came right back, but it's not bad yet. I have the antibiotics, but have not started the 6 week course because I don't know how I feel about Charlie being on antibiotics for 6 whole weeks.

We've been doing the keta/chlor medicated shampoo and I found the same stuff in a lotion and I think it helps, but doesn't get rid of the acne entirely. Actually, the vet thought I should put Charlie on antibiotics and the medicated shampoo (like on the weekends). I wanted to try the shampoo alone first to see if helps (this was actually the vet's first suggestion, but then he pulled out his almighty vet book and it said to do 6 weeks of antibiotics and the shampoo).

Has anyone ever done cephalexin for this long? It doesn't really mess up Charlie's digestive track in the sense that his poops are usually fine - somewhat better, but I noticed the last time he did a round that he seemed to be much more peppier (happier) once he went off the antibiotics - almost like the antibiotics were bothering him in some way. Not really sure.

So thoughts on cephalexin for 6 weeks?

Thanks,
Nancy
