I just received a call back from Miami Dade Customer Service Supervisor, Jack Galendo. The only thing he has on her is that she was a stray. Her skin test was negative (no mange) but it looks like she has skin conditions. Hot spots? Also, it looks like she did a number to her nose perhaps asphalt scrapping her or something. He did say that she has until the 22nd of this month. He is checking to see if any rescue group has extended the courtesy of a pull. He will get back to me and let me know. He would love to get her out and into a foster home. She needs some TLC for sure.

Thought you might enjoy this video. The first annual (hopefully) Extreme
Mutt Makeover was held this summer in Ft. Worth Texas in conjunction with
the Extreme Mustang Makeover. (www.extrememustangmakeover.com) . Ten dogs
from the local Humane Society were selected to be matched with ten trainers.
They were given 7 weeks to train their dogs to compete against each other in
basic obedience and any type of ‘free form’ things they could teach. The
dog in this video is a 2 ½ year old female black lab that was an owner
surrender when the original owners had a new baby. It took her 4 weeks
before she trusted the trainer enough to stay in the same room with her
without being on a leash. However, you can see the relationship that was
forged with positive reinforcement and taking the time to build some trust.

This video is of their finals performance after being high scorer in two out
of three of the preliminary events. You can’t see what they do with the
wooden box, but Tess jumps on it with all four feet and reaches up and gives
the trainer a kiss. They went on to win the event! She was a very special
dog that was being overlooked at the shelter. I know, I was the trainer.

Wabash County in Mount Carmel, IL is a small shelter. They have primarily outdoor runs so with the weather getting colder in the midwest, they have to move the dogs inside and that drastically cuts down on their available space. They only have 4 indoor kennels. These dogs need to get out. Madison, the shelter volunteer is wonderful to work with and they are very honest about the dogs they have there. A Veterinarian I used to work for called me yesterday with a request to help a client with a 1 1/2 old yellow neutered Lab.

The short version is the dogs actual owner was deployed to Iraq. He asked Mom (she is in her 60's) to adopt his Lab who was about a year old at the time. Mom agreed, has been a responsible owner, has done several obedience classes, had dog neutered, etc.
Grandmother (in her 80's) lives with Mom. Grandchildren come to visit frequently. Never a problem with dog. Until recently.

Per Mom, nothing is different at home but dog has become "dominate" with her, challenging her. Dog will be obedient while leashed. Recently dog was in an "excited" state and when Mom reached for dogs collar, he bit her hand. Mom now is afraid of dog, is concerned for her grandchildren and her elderly mother. Dog at Vets office is a perfect gentleman, has seemingly had very good temperament with all the clinic staff. Vet said he was shocked that dog bit Mom, just did not feel he was a biter.

Mom brought dog to the clinic for euthanasia. She did not feel comfortable putting the dog into a shelter situation. The Vet absolutely did not want to euthanize this young, healthy dog who may or may not have intentionally bit. He convinced the Mom to give him some time to try and find either a home or a rescue for the dog. The Vet has tried local Lab rescue but has not heard back from them and I certainly understand how horribly over burdened the rescues are in this economy.

I, myself, have not seen this dog but this Vet has not only been in Veterinary medicine for years, he has owned Labradors, has been the on-site Vet for the many dog shows here for years and is pretty dog smart. He truly does not believe this is a bad dog, just a dog that is a juvenile male, testing boundries and possibly without a proper outlets for a young male Lab.
I
s there anyone in Arizona who may be looking for a large (90#), yellow, neutered, obedience trained dog who needs a strong, confident owner? I don't know how much time Mom will be willing to hang onto the dog so I do think this is an urgent plea for help. I will also place this in the rescue section, placed it here because so many more people visit here.
I am going to try and get pictures of this guy and post them. I received a phone call today from a lady I know regarding her dog. She has developed severe asthma with COPD and has been hospitalized several times. Consequently, she has missed a lot of work and pay. She is losing her trailer and will be going to a homeless shelter either this weekend or next until she can get back on her feet. She has a black Lab, "Kovas", who is 4 yrs old, neutered, good with kids, not good with cats, and OK with some dogs and not with others. I forgot to ask if he is UTD on shots. He has been an indoor dog so I'm assuming he's housebroken. I've met him and he is a nice dog.

I know this is an all too frequent happening these days but does any one have room for him? She would be so appreciative. She doesn't want to do this but her back is against the wall. She has no money and a young son to support besides herself.

SPECIAL ALERT: DAIRYLAND GREYHOUND PARK CLOSING

Dear Vicki Strykowski,
We are writing to solicit your help with the rescue of a large group of dogs. The Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha, WI, will be closing its gates forever on December 31, 2009. There will be about 500 Dairyland dogs needing homes, of which, unfortunately, Greyhounds Only will be able to place a small number. In addition to the dogs we will already have as of that date, we hope to bring in at least 75 Dairyland dogs.

Typically, Greyhounds Only boards its rescue dogs at Emerald Kennels in Burlington, WI. Making room at the kennels for the influx of Dairyland dogs will necessitate that the dogs already in our program be moved into foster homes until they are adopted which may take anywhere from two weeks to a couple of months. This plan allows foster families to take in dogs that have already been treated for fleas, been de-wormed, spayed/neutered, and are up to-date on shots.


Why are we telling you this? We need your help with one or more of the following:
  • Fostering a dog: Even if you've never fostered a dog before, we can give you the necessary information and support to take a dog into your home until it finds its own.
  • Temporary boarding facilities: In the event we cannot find enough foster families, we welcome any leads you have on facilities possibly willing to donate boarding.
  • Money: The extra dogs we take in will require extra expenditures for medications, vet work, boarding and so on. Any donations are appreciated. Also, please check with your employer to see if they provide matching gifts so your contributions can be doubled or tripled.
  • Large bags of Pro Plan dog food are needed for the extra dogs in foster care.
  • Unused crates: Any crate you're not currently using would be appreciated for fostering.
  • Getting the word out about adopting a greyhound.
  • Fundraising
  • Transporting Dogs both local and long distance GURs to move dogs within the Midwest.
  • Gently used coats, collars, Frontline, Heartguard or Inteceptor
The timing of this track closure could scarcely be worse, coming, as it does, in the dead of winter and in a challenging economy when so many of us are already extended ourselves. We hope you will find it in your heart (and your pocketbook) to be able to extend yourselves yet again so that innocent animal lives aren't lost.
