Female leaking urine

Nittany has been leaking a small amount of urine lately. It's upsetting to her and concerning for us. She's an 8.5 spayed female.

Anyone have any ideas of where to start? I do not think she has a UTI as she does not urinate frequently. Could it be related to the Glucosamine or her thyroid condition? We'll take her to the vet on Monday if things don't improve.

Maybe it is spay incontinence.

Has she had it before? If it is definitely not a UTI you could be looking hormone deficient incontinence at her age. It is not uncommon. My 10.5 y/o has had incontinence issues off and on and more so in the last couple of years. She take the DES, which is a form of estrogen. It works really well for her. She had major incontinence last summer after a surgery. Three days on the DES and it was gone. You give a loading dose of 3-5 days and then the dose is once or twice a week. You figure out what works for your dog. Right now I'm giving once a week. Sometimes you can give the loading dose and one or two more(once a week) and then stop-some dogs just need that boost. It will probably depend on your vet's preference as to which drug they will prescribe. The other most common treatment is the Prion. I don't have any experience with it as my vet prefers the DES. Some people have had success using Leaks No More, which is a homeopathic. It didn't work in my dog's case but her's was pretty exteme. It's an option if you'd like to try something first. I'll post a link to one place that sells it but it may even be in a pet store.

The first time for us the Vet determined the ph of our girl's urine was out of whack and it was too alkaline. He asked us if one pee in one place killed the grass and it did. As opposed to several pees in the same place before the grass was killed. When the urine is so alkaline it burns the grass at one go it is also burning the dog. It hurt when she peed so she tried not to pee and got to the point where she ccould hardly hold on any longer and had little accidents.

You will have to take a urine sample to the Vet to determine what is wrong, don't give supplements without checking first. I forget what our girl was given to rebalance her ph but she was only on it for two weeks. Later in life it was determined she had spay incontinence and was on stilbestrol the rest of her life. I don't know if the two incidences, ph of the urine and spay incontinence, are related or not.

Our first lab Daisy was 8 when we adopted her. She too had this problem. The vet put her on PPA. After the initial dosing, we went to a daily maintenance and it solved the problem. There was another thread on this same topic not too long ago. I don't remember if it was in General Health or Senior Health. If I can find it, I'll post the link...it might be of help to you.

This seems to be how it goes. I don't know if it is from early spaying that causes them to have the issue or a combination of things. My friend who had a hysterectomy very young says the same thing happens to her if she doesn't take her estrogen!! She goes for the most natural form she can find. Here is another link discussing it too. The possibility of the PH of the urine being out of whack is interesting too. I've not heard of that before.

Thanks for the link. We're urine-leaking free today! Since it's been transient, I'm assuming we're dabbling (no pun intended) into some early senior issues. I'll keep an eye on her.

Funny you should bring this up today...I have finally figured out the phantom wet spots on my bed. Miss Bella is leaking every now and then as well. She is only 3, almost 4. Her issue seems to be happening once every couple weeks. Hope you all find the answer soon!

My senior girl would leak only once in a blue moon......... never gave any incontinence meds. Only because this would only happen once or twice every 3-4 months.

If you decide to take a sample to the vet to rule out UTI take the first urine sample of a.m. before any food or water and catch it in mid stream for best results.

Smile Thought

My 10 year old female lab started with a thyroid condition and is on Soloxin, and a few years later starting leaking occasionally. She is on Proin which is an incontinence pill. Maybe your lab would need that. Just a thought.

My almost 13 year old, Bailey, who was spayed early in life also has had a few incontinent episodes over the last month. Took her to the vet yesterday and we started her on the pheylpropanolamine (PPA). She's taking 2 tablets a day for now.

Molly, did you start off giving it twice a day and then cut back to once? My vet told me that if Bailey got too "wired" from the med to cut it back to half a tab twice daily.

I have a female on Proin........I agree with making sure of the uti....sometimes they can be sneaky.

I'm pretty sure that's how we started. It was many years ago so I can't be certain. I do remember tapering back to once a day. We had the option to split it into smaller doses but Daisy had done well with just the morning dose.
