Clumbers are another breed I thought about as I waterfowl hunt as well as upland. Plus they are supposed to be pretty laid back breed. As you mentioned, nearly impossible to find any.

The couple of breeders I talked with at shows in the UK many years ago said they do have a pretty calm and steady personality. About a year ago we were in Lowes with the dogs, and a guy came up to us and asked if our dogs were from the UK. I told him yes, and he said he thought so from how they looked. Turns out he's a vet in a town in southern Delaware. He said he had imported two Clumbers from the UK and has been breeding them for a long time. I wish I had gotten his info. He's the only person I've met or seen here in the US who has Clumbers.

I am very interested in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, I have a good breeder friend that breeds them. They are kind of like a cross between a Labrador, and a Border Collie in temperament, and they have a kid of Yodel-y Toller 'Scream' that scares me a little bit. But they are smart, funny, and a great size, and do really well in obedience and hunt testing.

I also know a breeder that has these neat little dogs, they look like terriers, but are actually in the hound group. I will have a Portuguese Podengo Pequeno one day. I fell in love with a gorgeous little male with a huge personality, and am just waiting for the right time to buy a show quality one.

the toller scream is hillarious. but wouldnt want to hear it too often . lots of tollers here oddly enough. talked to a breeder who said allergies and a issue in the breed (and other health issies) -'dnshe was a big raw proponent. most i see are in the sport world which makes sense. lovely color and a great size.

I had my little Annie a GSD/beagle mix so I wouldn't mind another beagle or shepherd again. Newfie is right up there on my list again and of course labs. Little Ginger changed my mind about little dogs so if another little Boston comes my way that would be okay too.

What kind interest me or what kind would I like to have?
I had a full size collie for 17 years, excellent dog.
A English Springer Spaniel for 12 years, excellent dog if you don't mind dealing with the coat.
Two mixed breed, mom and son team, excellent, came and went on their own, slept and ate in the garage, always around for me, the way dogs should live.
So, if I was looking right now; I'd check out the SPCA and local shelters.

I love the look of Great Pyrenees, & also love Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, & of course, Labs! I would think Pyrs need more space & activity than I could provide, & probably have too short of a lifespan, & that would always make me sad! Have had a couple of German Shepherds, & they are great dogs, but probably won't have another big dog. Love the personalities of Goldens, & the way they look too! Out of the large dogs we've had, I believe our Lab Molly has suited us best! I love her "common sense," her loyalty--she would protect us fearlessly if we needed it! I love her beautiful, shiny black coat, that shines like a million tiny mirrors after a bath, and her velvety ears, and especially, her kind eyes! And everything else about her! I adore that dog.... We have had 3 Pugs, & they are great, loving little companion dogs, but certainly have a lot of health problems. If I was always sure I could afford whatever vet bills they were going to come up with, I'd like to always have a Pug. I think other little dogs are cute, too, & we are more likely to stick with those now, because dh & I are in our 60's & not quite as active as we used to be--also a big dog that pulls hard on the leash hurts our hands, etc, so likely it will be small dogs for us, or we'll have to make a point to train very carefully. I think the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are beautiful, and Poms are cute, as are Shi Tzus, & Lhasa Apsos.....

The two breeds you mentioned are both on the exotic side. That means a narrower gene pool. You get what you get. I don't think there is another breed in the world that has been adapted in so many ways like the Labrador Retriever. It's like wine. There are whites and reds and roses, ports, champagnes there are tart wines, sweet wines, domestic, imported, fortified wines and non-alcoholic wines (why? Don't know.)

There are field labs, show labs, athletes and couch potatoes. Some are just love junkies (scratch that... they are all love junkies) and some are ate up with prey drive and intensity. They come in a variety of colors (but NOT SILVER). Their hereditary diseases are well known and most can be screened for giving your puppy the best chance for a good long life.

I've had GSD's and they are great dogs. But I won't go with another herding breed.

I like Cavaliers too, but there are so many health problems (mainly cardiac) in that breed that it scares me.
