So what kind of dog breeds interest you?

So far, I've had a beagle, a shepherd-x and now my lab Boomer. Had a German Shorthaired Pointer as a kid. Great dog but we weren't the right family for her. Unfortunately, I got to see what happens when an active dog isn't exercised properly. Luckily, she was re-homed to a lovely, dog-experienced, retired couple who had a hobby farm. We'd see her out and about looking relaxed and happy.

Right now, I'm interested in two medium-sized breeds - the Entlebucher Mountain Dog & the Mudi. Both are big dogs in smaller packages. After working with adult big dog issues, I guess I'm a little nostalgic about starting with a puppy. Except for the land-shark part.

Every time I feel like getting a puppy, I go look at the teeth marks on my old pine furniture.

I love Rhodesian Ridgebacks too but they're definitely not the right dog for me.

I've always been more of a large breed type of a person. When I was 5, my babysitter had a saint bernard and he was the sweetest dog. They also had a Chinese shar-pei and he was great too (the lady across the street was a shar-pei breeder). At my house, we had a lab-german shepherd mix and she was a great dog. We also got a beagle and that was a mistake because we were definitely not the right family for a beagle.

When I looked at other dog breeds for a potential next dog, I looked at goldens, bernese mountain dog, greater swiss mountain dog, and the anatolian shepherd. The anatolian and swissy aren't suited for my lifestyle though. While I really like the bernese, I can't get over the fact that they have such a short lifespan and that breaks my heart. If it weren't for that, I would be looking at the bernese more. Oh and I did look at the other one that is similar to the swissy and bernese...I think it is called appenzeller? But again, not suited for me.

So in the end because I love Sierra so much, I keep veering back to the labs.

We've had boxers, bullmastiffs and now labs. As a kid we had a boxer, shepherd mix, schnauzer, poodle, and peke, although I was in college for most of the poodle and pekinese and the schnauzer didn't stay long after she bit my Dad. I've never seen a Mudi, to my knowledge. Someone in our neighborhood had an entlebucher- he was a very handsome and calm dude. Not as friendly/sloppy as a lab, more reserved in his demeanor on our infrequent encounters.

I know what you mean about looking at furniture reminding you of the puppy stage, kitchen stools were the boxers, door frame into the dining room was Chase.

I tend to prefer larger breeds of dogs but were I to get a little dog, a little bitty dog, the look of an affenpinscher is just so adorable to me. I even know what I'd name it. I think one won at Westminster a few years ago- Banana Joe, what a cutie! For larger dogs, I'll probably stick with labs but maybe aim for slightly older ones!

I almost went with Hungarian vizsla before deciding another lab was best for us. Vizslas need daily intense exercise. Something we couldn't do, so another lab for us. Which I'm so happy I did.

Labs all the way. I may someday have a Flat-coated retriever though - have always loved them. If I were to go smaller, I might consider either a Field spaniel or a Springer spaniel (but would be VERY careful where I got it - I’ve seen some Springers that I love, and some that I can’t stand). Smaller than that? Can’t imagine it, but my neighbor has two really nice Shih-Tzu’s.

We had many breeds growing up. Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Goldens, Springer Spaniels, Pit Bull Terriers. I got my first Lab as an adult. I don't think I will ever have another breed but if I did it would be a Pit Bull or a Staffordshire Terrier Vic

entlebuthcer and mudi! you pick the ones that are more work! haha. i love some of the looks of the mudi but both breeds are a lot of dog with higher needs (and i like that labs are generally friendly unless you mess them up - with herding breeds it's harder to find that line where they are more friendly to strangers (not saying they have to love and want to play just at least be polite and move on).

I have a longer list of breeds I love but on my short list:
    labs
    bc
    pointer (GSP)

I quite like koolie's but not sure i'll go that route unless somethings happens to come up. I love many more but those are the ones I am more likely to own, besides mixes. I like a sporty active dog.

I guess it depends what more work looks like!

My shepherd mix was aloof but polite to strangers. 'Tis true I really noticed the difference when I got Boomer.

Koolies are good-looking dogs! Another herding breed I didn't know existed. Long lives at 18 years.

From the first time I saw one, I've wanted a Clumber Spaniel. I've never actually seen one here in the US, and there weren't very many in the UK either. If I was to go with a smaller dog, it would be a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
