Pit bull attack

We were coming back from our walk tonight, got to where my garage is, and a pit bull jumped the fence a few houses down and charged at us. I ran to my fence and tried to get Roxy inside the gate to safety, but her being totally innocent, she turned back around wanting to play with it. It bit her HARD on her side. The pit bull's owner, who reeked of booze, came for the dog. She put it back in their yard, then came back and tried to blame ME for the attack. After I told her my dog was on a leash and asked what her f$^+@!% excuse was, she back pedaled and said she would pay the vet bills and keep a muzzle on her dog. My landlord, who is a cop, was right there and didn't do anything about it, saying it's a civil matter. I'm sitting at the emergency vet right now totally freaked out, waiting for the vet to come get me after inserting drains and stitches into my poor little girl. What's the best course of action here? Is my landlord right?

Oh poor Roxy (and you)...so so scary.
I definitely think you can report the bite to animal control. After so many repeat offenses, dogs are removed from the home due to safety issues. Sounds like the pit's owner is trying to make things right so you don't report her dog. I think it's a civil matter when no humans are involved/bit/attacked. Still your landlord sounds like a jerk in this situation.

He's wrong in the respect that the police have nothing to do with it. File a police report and report the woman to animal control who could well put the dog down. The odds that she will pay the bill are slim to none but the police report will allow you to file a claim against her. After you file the reports, call your homeowners insurance and ask them how to file a claim against her. The insurance company of whoever owns the home should be liable.

Oh, and the leash laws she violated. Your landlord is a ****.

Document everything while the incident is fresh in your mind and take photos of the wound. Keep all paperwork and receipts from the vet. File a report with the police and animal control (where I live animal control is part of the police department). A dog who attacks with no provocation needs to be put down, regardless of breed.

I'm so sorry! I would call animal control tomorrow in the morning to report the incident. Do you know for sure the dog jumped the fence or is it possible the dog was let or escape? I think it matters. Being since it's an unprovoked attack the dog might be put down. And yea your landlords a di*k for not doing anything.

Hope she she heals well and isn't scared of other dogs because of this incident! Keep us updated!

Poor Roxy! Hope it's not too serious and she's back to normal real soon. These things are really sad and most of the time, like 99.9,% it's the dog's owner who's to blame for such an incident, not the dog regardless of their breed. Some people are just idiots and shouldn't be allowed to have dogs. Sending good thoughts for Roxy's fast recovery.

Call animal control, report it to them. Pictures, times, people present and document every phone call, conversation you have. You will probably end up having to sue them in small claims court. I don't know the laws where you live, but stick a tape recorder in your pocket if you talk to these people face to face, not over the phone.

long story short, pit bull jumped the fence next door, attacked Dallas, bit me. I did all the above including call the HOA and let everyone know if it does it again I'll shoot it.

3 month later, jumped the fence again and that was the last time that happened.

I'm so sorry to hear about this attack. Keep is posted on Roxy and how she is doing. I agree on filing a report with police.

Thanks for the well wishes. I got Roxy home, but she's groggy from the sedation and whining. Poor puppykid. I hope that she's not traumatized from this, as well. She always thought all dogs were potential best friends, but now I am not so sure if she will keep that mindset. I guess we will see.

I do not blame the dog. The owner is 100% responsible for this and I told her that.

The pit bull definitely jumped their fence, then ran full speed to our property where the incident occurred. I highly doubt the owner will contribute anything towards vet bills. When she started out blaming me, she tried to say the dog didn't bite Roxy, until I showed her the blood and the wounds on Roxy's side. I told her I was going to take her to the emergency vet and I expected her to pay for it, in which she replied that the bites weren't that bad and all I need is a little Neosporin, to try to get out of paying. I said, "No, she clearly needs stitches. The bites from your dog are really nasty". I informed her that Roxy is my baby and I will do whatever it takes to protect her, as well as the fact that her dog is aggressive and it was her responsibility to keep him from hurting others. She changed her tune and said she would pay the vet bills (yeah right). I told her we would definitely discuss this again, then went into the garage and left for the vet.

I don't really care if she pays the vet bills or not. I worry that the dog will attack again, because I am quite sure it has before, based on tonight's events. I will be terrified to walk Roxy now, because it could happen again in a second. On the other hand, I am also concerned about retaliation if I report it. What a bad situation.
