Leash Lesson This Morning :(

Oban handed me the leash so we could head to the car for his drive to his walk. It was wrapped around his back and one leg but we were only going to the car so I left it. From across the street the man and his intact male GR came out of their backyard and the GR tore across the road to do Oban damage. I yanked Oban around behind me but because of the way the leash was wrapped he went down on his side on the paving stones. I had no idea what was happening with his leg or even which leg it was. If Oban had been hurt it probably would have been because of the leash because I did get in front and yell GO HOME a couple of times at the dog and he stopped and he did go home. Lesson learned, fix the leash properly no matter how short the walk. A freaky thing but still, could have hurt my dog. Or, if the GR had not stopped, Oban was off his feet and very vulnerable.

What is it with people and their out of control dogs running off-leash? Glad no one was hurt.

Glad to hear he is okay. One of my neighbors has a german shepherd that is friendly to humans, but gets territorial with other dogs. They have him off leash when they are in the front and it drives me up the wall when I take Sierra out for a walk.

I'm ready for it to get cold and nasty out so people stop hanging out in their front yards with their off leash dogs who they have no control over. In the past month Tux and I have been accosted by random strange dogs bee-lining into his face at least a dozen times. Thank god all of the dogs have been friendly, and also thank god that Tux is as neutral and non-reactive as he is, b/c he should not have to tolerate being on leash and having that happen to him with an off leash dog. Still pisses me off to no end. It has happened a couple of times with Cabo as well, who does not take kindly to it and has gotten into a couple of scuffles with the off leash dogs who have approached him - one incident I ended up bleeding. Most people in my neighborhood who have dogs have no business having them.

There's my rant on that, and yes I hear you on the leash safety PSA. Tux a lot of times when walking wants to roll on his back, and then when he gets up he wants to have a zoomy. I have to be super careful that while he is rolling the leash doesn't get tangled in his legs, b/c I don't want him to jump up and start moving with a leg tangled up in it.

Good heads up post. I'm conscious of the leash being wrapped around my legs in case Archie sees a squirrel. Same should go for him too.

I do a lot of training with a 25' check lead, and it drives me crazy how often if gets fouled around their legs. Countless times I have to stop and untangle before we can move on. I swear the person who figures out how to make a foul proof leash will make a fortune!

I thought there was some expert way to keep the long line from tangling in their legs and that I, as a lab newbie, just didn't know.

I use 4' leashes with my guys and even that short a leash sometimes gets where it doesn't belong. Sunnie has a habit of stepping over hers when we're stopped to sniff (the reason I use 4' is so that it doesn't drag on the ground...I have no idea how she manages this since I never see it happening...it's when she stays stopped and we're ready to move on that I realize what she's done) and is also very good at getting her leash caught under Danny's tail...which is another dead stop occasion. If they didn't weave in and out when sniffing, none of this would happen. (too bad a coupler didn't work for us...talk about the leash getting under Danny's tail...we couldn't walk).

Glad all is OK.

I definitely agree about the cold nasty weather keeping the dogs of ignorant people inside. We didn't see the neighborhood pit bull last winter...hope that will hold true this year, too. (he's now got a friend so I have two to worry about) Grrrrr.......

just my experience-
when cord gets tangled around their legs, immediately let go, removes any pressure, pretty much a no-brainer.
also, what type of cord do you have? I use home made and one from Bean, the Bean cord is 3/8" smooth nylon, not as likely to have these problems and goes thru the woods, weeds much better.
no guarantee fix though.

I gotta get me another heavy heeling stick. Sometimes I've found yelling at the on-coming dog does nothing. Pounding the ground in front of the encroaching dog's feet AND yelling is better. (Pisses off owners. But, oh well.)
