Poor Oban, Hurt HIs Bad Leg

Thanks to, well we aren't sure, but think it was a neutered male taking exception to Oban being intact. Another factor might have been that the other dog was leashed and Oban wasn't, though it seemed friendly at first. Then It mounted and when Oban said, "GEt OFF" it just went for him. It was bigger and Oban got the worst of it but surprisingly no ripped ears or torn skin. Just his bad leg which didn't seem bad at all till several hours later. He must have twisted it while trying to get up from under the other dog. The other dog had Oban by the throat and then by his ear.

Thanks heavens the lady with the other dog wasn't bitten too because she went down and did not let go of the leash and if the dogs had moved over her she might have. The man who lives in the house we were beside heard the commotion and came to help. WE know him and his dog, a black Lab girl. The lady might even have been at his house as she went with him through his gate. Or maybe he was just being very nice and getting her dog away from us. He was holding the dog, she couldn't. She and her dog are ok but I bet she's as shook up as I still am.

I called Oban's VEt and she said just ice him for the first 24 hours and give him Traumeel 3 x a day. I'd already started with the ice. I thought to alternate warm and ice but she said no warmth till after the first 24 hours. It's helping already, he will put weight on that leg now.

      Crap.

Oh, poor buddy! I'm glad there was no blood and hope his leg heels up without delay. The mental image of the dogs fighting and the other owner rolling around on the ground- Yikes!

Poor Oban! Hopefully it's just a pulled muscle and a little rest and love from Mom will be all the healing he needs.

Oban is better this morning. It really is a wonder his ears don't have holes in them, I can see the bruises and feel the swelling.

If this was a neutered dog against an intact dog it's the worst one we've ever met. None has ever launched into full out attack right away before. Oban has been able to evade all the others (except the one only neutered for 10 days who tried to jump into the back of my jeep to get at Oban and it turned out our cars were parked only two apart) by literally turning his cheek, butt cheek, to the dog. Off the top of my head I can think of 5 other neighbours with intact males who sometimes walk that trail or the street the house is on. One is a 7 month old puppy with a bad front leg himself from a birth defect. I wonder if I should be warning people. The other lady could not hold onto her dog, even when he was leashed.

This is why I don't let mine meet "new" dogs anymore.
      Hope Oban feels better soon,
