Paddle Boarding + Lab = Panniculitis

I've mentioned before how I've had to ban Boomer from paddle boarding because he keeps jumping into the water even when he's tired. All I get to do is sit on the board, haul that boy back onto the board over and over and over and over again, and eat dog hair.

A few weeks ago, noticed a lump under Boomer's front armpit. It was the length of an egg but narrower. It slid freely (and freakishly) up and down the upper, inside part of his leg. I thought it could be a lipoma but couldn't understand how I'd missed it.

When I located the lump for the vet, I realized the lump was significantly smaller (I'd left it alone because I didn't want to aggravate it in case I was wrong about it being a lipoma). Vet aspirated it because (a) location and (b) Boomer's been treated for oral melanoma. Luckily, initial results looked fine. All good.

Vet called me the next day with the lab results. He said it was panniculitis, an inflammation of the fatty layer just under the skin, usually due to trauma (90% of the time, it disappears on its own). Vet hesitated, then said the armpit's an unusual spot to get it. The lab guy was apparently curious - wanted to know if Boomer went hiking and regularly scrambled over branches or logs.

A light went off in my head. Paddle boarding! The rails (edge) of the board are curved and as wide as a thick branch. Dog obsessed with jumping into water. Scrambling against the rails to get back onto the board. Armpits. Board. Oh. My. Gosh.

I'm really glad it wasn't anything serious but who would've guessed? FYI to anyone whose dog scrambles over branches or logs.

Right now Boomer's doing a great impression of a calm dog snoozing in the living room.

Glad it's nothing serious. That trauma makes sense...but definitely not something you'd anticipate without prior experience.

My first thought was a hematoma from an injury. Glad all is OK.

Now that's a strange one all right. Glad it's not such a bad one. And now I know a new word, Panniculitis. Thank you Boomer but I would gladly have remained ignorant of that word.
