Three Dobermans - Things You Don't Know About Your Neighbours

Actually it's down to two in our village. One girl had a leg amputated due to cancer but it had spread and just over a year later they had to say goodbye to her. We met the remaining two today, saw them ahead, approaching us and realized they were our friends and just left Oban to meet them. The man did the same thing but delayed a bit as I was wearing my rain jacket instead of my usual vest and he waited to see if he knew who we were.

I told him about Oban's run-in with the nasty dog and he told me he thought at first I might be the nasty owner he has to watch out for. She has a chocolate Lab and she hates him and his dogs, yells and swears at him and reported him to the animal control for having his Dobes off leash. Where they are allowed to be off leash too. And when I meet her she's really nice to us and her dog(s) (she's down one as well, one ran away and was never found) is always off leash too.

Funny huh? She's nice to us and not to him. He's a cop and I told him I think she's "carding" his dogs just based on their race, er, breed. We were careful too, the first times we met, but his dogs are nice. Our only worry one time was the big one, he's HUGE, and Oban started to play and he was afraid Oban, with his already gimpy leg, might be hurt.

I would never have guessed that lady who is friendly with us to the point when we meet we sometimes change route to walk together would be so foul mouthed and mean with him and his dogs.

I think you may have hit it on the nose, breed discrimination.

    People are weird.

One of Kimber's BFFs when she was little was a Doberman. Oh, and there was a rescued Dobie at the dog park- he was big and so scared of other dogs. Back then Kimber loved all other dogs and she would play so gently with this big, sweet dog. The owner cried when the Dobie actually initiated play with Kimber for the first time.

    100% breed discrimination.
One time I dog sat a husky (female) and german shepherd (male), i was walking them on the flexi leashes the owner told me to use, they were both older (10 and 11) the shepherd was massive, but always walk very nicely beside me on walks, whereas the husky was way infront at the end of the leash, easy to "reel" in when i wanted to though. one time this lady was walking her little cockapoo and saw the husky (who was closer to her, in front of me) was all okay about it and smiled at her, the dogs saw each other from a few feet away and everything was great,

then saw the shepherd........ who hadn't moved from my side, hadn't seen her dog yet, and all the sudden her whole body changed, she yelled at me "keep it away" and RAN away with her dog as fast as she could, looking back every few strides... I guess to see if he was chasing her or something.... the whole time the shepherd never left my side, walking slow and calm. talk about breed discrimination right there haha

People always gave me and my previous dog a wide berth even though she was calm, on-leash at my side, sat whenever I stopped, and was clearly a senior. I absolutely understood why - she looked like a big black wolf. I tried to be considerate of other people's perspective (especially parents with strollers & small children) but oddly, kids around 10 years of age LOVED her on sight.

Having a bully or guardian breed, I think you can expect people to react with caution or even apprehension. But unwarranted yelling and swearing? No.

Sometimes some dogs just don't get along, it has nothing to do with the breed. I personally don't like it when people just let their dogs off-leash and have no control whatsoever. I don't want my dog to approach/be approached by unfamiliar dogs. Of course I am more relaxed when the dog off-leash is a maltese and not a rottweiler, that goes without saying.

I don't know what is the case here though, but if I were him I wouldn't care. I'd just make sure that my dog(s) don't approach her dog and I'd mind my own business.

Sad about the lady and the way he and his dog are both treated.

People used to cross the street if they seen me coming with my boys. Coleman and Bailey were both big and both black, if I had them out separate Bailey was more approachable to some, probably because of his hairy self. Sarah gets some looks at times people will pet and talk to Ginger before they go anywhere near Sarah. Although Tootsie loved attention it is sad that some people wouldn't pet her because of her eye.

My parents had a doberman when I was in college. She probably wan't very well bred but she was as sweet as a kitten at home. The vet's office had her labeled as a fear biter and muzzled her as she walked through their door, which annoyed my mother to no end. I think many people who have no prior experience with dobes or rotties or other dogs of that size and general variety just don't know how to act around them. Clearly the woman with the chocolate lab is of that ilk but that's not a reason to be as aggressive as she sounds. Nothing like screaming and acting aggressive around almost any dogs to keep them relaxed and friendly! Surely that wouldn't be advisable around the types typically used as guard or protection pooches, who knows what instincts might kick in?

Somebody asked me once if I had met the new guy with the three Dobes. After writing this, I think it was her. At that point I had already met them and enthused about what good dogs they were. I hope it was her, I can't remember, but I guess if it was her my endorsement didn't help.
