Don't let your dog lick fabric or leather.

We bought new pet beds for our dogs a couple of months ago. Fran started licking them. This behavior escalated. She got a mysterious gut infection a few weeks ago and we treated it but were frustrated as to the cause especially since there was a recurrence right after it seemed to be addressed. Two days ago, she threw up bile and the conventional vet told us that she was fine and gave us anti-nausea meds. Meanwhile, Fran has either been really wiped out or her normal self which led us to believe that we were imagining it.

We took her to our holistic vet just to make sure. She did her usual tests and said that her read on it was either cancer or chromium poisoning. If it is cancer, it would be very sudden. On the other hand, this new behavior is extremely suspicious and doesn't seem coincidental. Regardless, we learned something very important today.

Chromium is used to dye fabrics and leather. Fran has been obsessively licking the pet beds. She is now on a detox program but this could have led to serious long term consequences.

I know that people often wonder if there's a problem with their dog(s) licking their furniture, carpets or other fabrics and yes there is. Just wanted to put that out there.

Oh, wow. I give our guys their biscuits/rawhide/ears on a runner at the kitchen sink because Dan will obsessively lick wherever the treats are given. I wonder if it's as much of a problem with washable cotton...gotta do some research.

oh my,,,, never would i have thought that they could get that kind of dose from licking..... hoping she;s well on the way to being detoxed.

never thought about that, but it makes a lot of sense.
Fortunately none of ours have ever really licked/chewed on fabric.

Well, the lady who made my rugs has no clue. I'm hoping anything that was in the fabric has long since washed out...they get washed a lot and rotated. There's definitely a chance that the cloth was dyed this way. At least the dogs don't chew fabric...just lick off the crumbs/yummy scent left behind.

I had no idea that chromium was used to treat fabrics. It is a heavy metal so it stays in the host system just like mercury.
