Does the excitedness, the joy, become less with time?

I've had Hunter now for over two weeks (he's 3 yrs old, going on 4) and I just love him so very much. I'm always so excited and so happy to see Hunter and often find myself really looking forward to playing with him or just hanging out together. We are well on our way to being best buds!

A friend said it's probably just like that right now because he's still new to me. I would like to think that's not really true though. Hunter is so special to me and the best dog that I have ever personally met (I know you all also have some very wonderful dogs). The previous owner did an excellent job training Hunter, he is a very obedient and happy dog and listens to commands very well. He doesn't ever even want to jump up on the couch. Hunter is such a loving dog and I feel so lucky to have him.

Anyway, in your opinion, does the excited and happy feeling fade with time?

I seem to think that the closer Hunter and I become, the more I look forward to spending time with him.

Oh, here's a pic of Hunter on Christmas Eve.

Not for me. I still enjoy coming home to those smiling happy faces!

I know that it hasn't lessened in the 5 years we've had Gabby. If anything, it just gets to be a deeper, more loving bond. Any time we go somewhere, we always get home and open the door to greet her before we do anything else (like unload the car, get the mail, etc). Enjoy life with handsome Hunter!

Thanks for the replies -- glad to see that it doesn't lessen, just as I had thought! My friend isn't really a dog, or animal, person. So, she probably just doesn't really get it.

I’ve had several that made it to 15 or close to it, and no, it doesn’t lessen.

It never lessened for me, either. And that probably proves that I like dogs better than people.

Where else are you ever going to find someone who will be so happy to see you every. single. time? How can you not reciprocate that joy, even if you've had an otherwise terrible day? Yeah, my dogs love to see me and I love to see them!

That's as ridiculous as looking at a new mother and saying "you think you like the infant now, but in a couple of years you'll be over it." Of course it doesn't lessen—it only strengthens. (And if it doesn't strengthen, then you have no business having either an animal or a child.)

I cannot stand being away from Hoku. Indeed, since we brought her home she has been with my husband—who takes her to work daily—almost constantly. We were both a wreck when she was in the hospital last Friday, and I still can't sleep well in our bedroom (she's on the first floor in the adapted guest room, her night-time infirmary).

    It doesn't lessen.
