    pooping out bits of sticks

My girl Sunny, just loves to chew sticks. Usually the brittle ones but I notice they are coming out of her butt when she poops. There is no blood or anything.
It's usually small pieces but it is concerning me, usually I just say "leave it" when I see her grabbing one. She seems to really hunt for them. Could it be a form or "roughage" for her?

Oban vomits them up. I limit stick chewing because they are TOO rough. They could cause internal injury. I don't think it's a dietary craving, I think it's just a chew and swallow craving. Slippers and wood door trim might satisfy that too, just as possibly disastrously.

Please don't let her chew on sticks. A friend of mine lost her Standard Poodle to bloat (2 operations, he died during the third) because a small piece of twig lodged in his pyloric valve (the first surgery, which also included stomach tie procedure since Poodles are prone to bloat to begin with)...the second two bloat occurrences were determined to be just because of the first and a weakness then for them.

Gosh, we know of a Standard Poodle who bloated three times and died on the third, second operation, as well. In the first operation (second bloat) the stomach was stapled to the inside of him somewhere and on the third bloat it ripped open and did even more damage because of the staples. His litter mate brother was fine, never bloated.

    Ah, sorry, highjack.

My dogs are stick chewers, especially Lark. I don't like it, I spend an inordinate amount of time picking up sticks from our yard which is heavily populated with sycamore trees and silver maples. Those stupid trees drop twigs and limbs like labs shed hair. I haven't been able to break her of the habit, just work on getting her to drop them if she's chewing on one and try to keep her otherwise engaged.

I have one stick chewer, of course it's Anthony. Don't know how to completely stop it, we keep the yard as picked up as we can but it's a constant battle. He throws up occasionally with the wood included.

Brooks is my stick eater. Drives me nuts. Leave and drop work most of the time, buy every now and then he just has to munch away.

Cassie has done this since a puppy. LEAVE IT is about every 3 seconds during our nightly walk around the neighborhood. Funny thing is she doesn't tend to eat sticks while off leash in the woods or during breaks in training. Seems like just a bad habit. She knows I don't like it and will try to sneak a stick in during he walk.

Samson has picked up stick chewing this summer. My neighbors tree is now over my yard and the tree must be dying because limbs are completely littering my back yard. I pick up stick after stick after stick. I have to go out with Samson every single time and chase him away from the sticks. Right now they are frozen to the ground so I get a break. He knows I do not allow it and he will literally run off the deck and try to grab the sticks off the ground while running at full speed knowing I am right there trying to prevent him from getting sticks. It's crazy!!! This summer was the first this bad because of the crazy tree. I will take care of it next year and make certain the limbs over my property line are cut down and properly disposed of!

Mine all did it as puppies, but also all out grew it, too.
