    Gotcha.

I brought Stella home 13 years ago on December 30 or 31. The specific date does not matter to me. Here are a few photos documenting our life through the years.

    First photo. Sitting pretty.

Same day. 'I was sitting here minding my own business and the couch cushion exploded. Honest!'

A duck in a dog suit.

    She was always in motion.

Some of her play was pretty fur-raising. Here she almost collides head-on with Corndog.

With Faye and my foster (Sushi?)at the top of Enchanted Rock, Texas.

On the Mighty Texas Dog Walk. 'Make way, make way, coming through.'

After earning her Canine Good Citizen.

Another Mighty Texas Dog Walk. 'Come on, let's get moving!'

Day 1 of our move to Canada. 'Are we there yet?'

    Yes we are there.

I call this her 'martini and cigarette' pose. (It was a hot day).

She adapted very well to the new winter reality.

At the beach on a summer day with Kendal and Achilles.

    Curl uppy puppy.

Return to Texas in early 2016.

She and Achilles have been buds for over ten years. But eventually enough is enough.

At the vet. Look closely above the counter and you see her ears and the top of her head. She's up on her hind feet, looking at the treat jar.

Rolling in the grass still feels pretty good.

Her favourite place now is on the dog bed in front of the wall furnace, waiting for then enjoying the blast of heat.

I said earlier that the exact gotcha date does not matter. Other things related to bringing her home matter far, far more.

One thing is that her previous owners readily gave her up, entrusting her to my care. Another is that despite (perhaps because of) the seriously challenging trials we went through I refused to give up on her. Or give up on myself. Which leads me to a third thing.

Stella was the right dog at the right time. She was and still is a spirit dog.

    Gotcha Stella. Then, today, forever.

Really nice Gotcha Day tribute Kleb, Stella is beautiful!! I wish her many more years of being loved and spoiled by you two. What a wonderful life she has led.

Aside from Labradors, I think Australian cattle Dogs are the smartest and most biddable, loyal dogs. I don't know that I would have another herding breed, they are very independent thinkers, and you really have to earn their respect and trust before they will consider that you may match their intelligence and decision making skills... (read- they are bone heads) But once you do gain that relationship, you could not ask for a better companion, if I did get another herding breed, it would be an ACD.

I sincerely hope you don't mind a slight hijack, I'll remove it if you wish, you just took me down memory lane a bit....

My husband and I adopted a 12 week old ACD mix I named Quinn from a kill dog pound in the early 90's, he was a very special dog, and taught me almost everything I know about dog behavior, and he chose me as his person. He and I won a years supply of dog food at an obedience competition, and we donated the food back to the shelter he came from. I miss him almost daily still and he has been gone 8 years, and he was 15 when he moved on ahead.

Quinn was a great swimmer and loved going boating with us

    He and Ben
