    Unfriendly Dog Encounter

I was recently walking in the city with my sweet and mellow middle-aged Labrador when this man walking an aggressive pitbull on a leash came around the corner. He had the dog restrained, but that dog was close to my dog and children. It was very nasty and aggressive. There was no conflict, as we suddenly stopped and the owner of the other dog actually did have control of that unmuzzled little monster. It left me shaken for my children and my precious dog. My first inclination was that I shouldn't be in this downtown area of the city with my herd. Does anybody have any other thoughts or tips on what do do in that kind of situation. I was thinking of carrying a cane and/or breaker bar but I don't know what those would have done if that dog had gotten out of control. My sweet Lab wouldn't have known what hit her. She thinks all are friendly toward her and doesn't have a mean bone in her body. And then there is the children. Heck, to be honest, I was not wanting to tangle with that animal. i just said pit-bull because that was what it was. It could have been a Rottweiler, German Shepherd, or even another Labrador. However, I don't think I would have had the exact same reaction if it had been an aggressive beagle. My cattle dogs would have been weary and ready unlike my sweet lab.

curious - why do you call the dog a little monster? do you know this dog well? Does he have a known history of attacking?

I've had my dogs attacked. nothing insanely serious though I was steaming mad both times (neither times in off leash parks and once the owner was yelling that his dog was friendly - yeah sure). So I am cautious where I walk and put myself in front of my dog now (he is a senior and gets picked on BECAUSE he is old these days). I'm always alert about what dogs are around (or other dangers) and will walk back or cross the road or whatnot if I am uncomfortable (this doesn't happen often). Honestly i do this even with stupid friendly rude dogs. (you know the "my dog is friendly" one that is charging at your dog with hard body language and then jump all over your dog who is on leash? that's totally NOT APPROPRIATE even if it isn't aggressive).

Honestly? If I saw that the dog was acting aggressively...as soon as I spotted it, I would have gone out into the street or crossed over. Having the dog restrained doesn't always calm the reaction of non-violent dogs and humans (your Lab and little humans in this case).

Me? I'm not in a city. My dogs tend to be reactive. I automatically give aggressive or even overly interested/energetic dogs a wide berth or else I'll have two rude manic pooches of my own to contend with.

There are potentially two loose pit bulls on my street at any given time (same family...don't get me started) and my husband and I automatically take a stun stick with us if we're walking on our street. (Stun stick = stun gun but longer for additional protection from nasty dog's mouth. I hope I never have to use except to zap the air as a deterrent. Also, they're not legal everywhere so if you're interested, check that out. Mine is called the Badass and I got it from Amazon.) https://www.amazon.com/Master-Metal-...ass+stun+stick

I too have encountered the "He/She's friendly" owner and their dog who is showing all the signs of trouble. I've crossed the road or even told the other person I was not comfortable with the two meeting. You have to be very vigilant especially with your kids along. Bottom line, I evade a possible nasty situation.

On the other hand, with Archie I have to warn others they are going to get licked.

The pet owner was NOT friendly. The whole incidence was marked by the fact that he came abruptly and without warning around the corner. There was no way to avoid him.

The lake/park we go with our dogs in the morning has a stretch where you have the option of going up past houses instead of staying on a mulched path...and which we had no choice but to use for the week or so they were working on restoring that path. The top of the paved hill we had to go up was a tight exit between two garages...total blind spot. I had the dogs stay behind me while I went through my "burglar looking to see if I've been spotted" routine to make sure no one from that dog-laden neighborhood was around the corner.

You never let the dogs lead around a corner, regardless of how friendly they are...for the safety of your own dogs as well as that of others.

Your incident is the type I file in my "stupid or careless or arrogant people" category. I'm glad you weren't closer to the corner than you were.
