    The runt of the litter

I got a new lab mix puppy from a local rescue this weekend. I had only seen a few pictures of the litter online and didn’t have any say in which one I was going to receive.
When I went to pick him up I was a little taken aback at how tiny he was. I was told that he was “the runt of the litter”…clearly.
My question is, are “runts” destined to always be small dogs? Do they ever catch up in size?

He is the sweetest thing in the world and I love him immensely, but I had my heart set on a big dog.

The smallest puppy in the litter doesn't always end up the smallest adult out of the litter. However, it's hard to say how big your puppy will be. Labs come in all shapes and sizes, and whatever he's mixed with will influence his size too.

Very true. Mulder was one of the smallest in his litter (not a true runt, just on the smaller side) and ended up one of the biggest. Cookie was smaller than Sassy at birth (litter of two) and now is almost an inch taller and several pounds heavier. That said, Daos is correct in that the mix will make a difference too.

Thank you both. I love the look of labs. My Onyx is thin and I was hoping for a big guy this time. At the end of the day it doesn't matter as long as my little Armani is healthy.

Hemi's Uncle Mac was the runt of the litter, he ended up being the biggest of all of them. His head and his paws are huge, hemi is taller than Mac by an inch but mac has 20lbs on him. Just sheer size and build.

Mac is on top of Hemi.

Mac is sitting, Hemi is standing

And thanks Pogie. He's cute and already super smart. No accidents in the house since I got him.

Congrats on the addition. I have seen runts grow to be the biggest of the pack too. Enjoy your cuteness
