    Coyotes

It's that time of year again - mating season for coyotes. They are very aggressive and they are everywhere. I know we have them around here. Recent report of attacks have been in more urban areas in Chicago. A weimer was attached and it was a big dog. Luckily, minimal injury.

Keep your eyes open and be careful.

Someone has been shooting ours. Everyone is still locked up though. This year we have a golden eagle in our backyard. Pretty but, really? It's huge.

Thanks for the heads up! We have a neighbor that feeds ALL the wildlife. He even puts dog food out for the foxes but the coyotes get it first.

Here too though we have to wonder how credible some reports are. Worse, I think, is how people react, with fear and lack of knowledge. We have people putting out illegal traps, planning to illegally move wildlife and hunting on private land without permission. One place we regularly walk is legal for hunting but even people with dogs who actually look a bit like coyotes don't take precautions with the dogs or themselves. OH and I have seen, and I have spoken to, coyote hunters going in there.

Feeding many wildlife is not legal either, is your neighbour allowed to feed?

The feedings has led to the house next to them having a bobcat make a home under their deck.....waiting to see if that house will take care of the issue....they are very unsettled about this too.

We hear coyotes around here and see an occasional one dead on the road. Mocha and Latte are leashed for their last potty session before bed.

Though not as physically dangerous it's skunk mating season too. I have seen/smelled 6 dead skunks on my way to work last week.

And fox mating season. Vixen fixin' for some mixin' smells like skunk, faintly, sort of with lemon.

There's a coyote pelt hanging in our basement. Years ago when OH was a C.O. some men hit it on the road, turned it in to MNR and OH skinned it and dried it. New cats and visiting dogs always give it a good sniff, even all these years later.

This past week twice about 7:15-7:30am there have been coyotes right up in the neighbour's yard. Its daylight by then! Tuesday morning, Scout goes barrelling off the deck hollering his fool head off sprinting for the back fence - there's a coyote right out there. out all the way to the back in slippers and housecoat -thats the only section of fence that isn't made taller than 4ft. Realize on the way out there that there's 2 coyotes, one is headed over to the neighbour's back tree line, the original one is trotting back into the field. Even with me hollering at it, it just leisurely trotted away.
Next morning i checked 1st, and sure enough, there was one at the neighbours back treeline.
I've seen tracks almost every day, across the back of my place (outside of the fence), around the corner of the fence and then across the nieghbour's open back yard.
they haven't been coming up this close since the previous neighbours (who used to leave full garbage bags on their deck) moved...

They are pretty much everywhere near here except in our part of the county. I'd think our park would support some - there's tons of other wildlife (deer, fox, etc), but there haven't been any confirmed sightings closer than 5-10 miles away.
