Fun! We should have a live 'watch-along' thread for the labs.

Even if they did have a scale, there is no DQ attached to weight. The weights listed in the standard are not disqualifications. I'm sure you already knew that, of course.

Same time every year with folks...

According to the Westminster Kennel Club website FAQ, the answer's no. BUT, we can view breed judging on demand shortly after completion of judging for that breed at their website under MEDIA > VIDEO. Just checked it. Videos are available now.

Waiting for the beagles. I've been thinking of my boy Banjo lately.

Yes I know. I also would like to see the weights of the dogs. I hear 'he looks heavy as he is carrying his heavy coat'. I think some of these dogs, especially at Westminister, are close to 100lbs. Not healthy. JMHO Vic

At the last vet visit he was at a few weeks ago, 89 lbs. He usually fluctuates between 88-93 lbs. depending upon what activities we are doing and how busy we are. I do not subscribe to taking weight off/putting weight on for shows. He works and shows as he is. Below is the same dog.

Below is my yellow boy. He looks HUGE right? He fluctuates between 80-83 lbs. He has a large amount of coat.

Some people I see at my usually field training place have dogs from purely field lines -- they weigh more than my dogs. We have talked about it, because they are as surprised as I am. Some field bred and pet bred dogs are 100 lbs. based on their structure. Just last week I was following a FB thread where people with non-bench type dogs were talking about how much their dogs weigh -- over 100 lbs. and so proud of it. Breed to their studs -- they produce big Labs! *eye roll* That's silliness. It's not simply a phenomena of show dogs.

Some Labs that show are fat. Others are not. Cyrus, last year's best of breed Lab at Westminster, who also placed 3rd in the sporting group, is a dog I see all the time in person, and with whom I've been hands on, unlike all of the internet "experts" who posted about how "fat" he was after the show last year. That dog is rock solid and carries a great coat. He was worked consistently and trained with purpose on a treadmill. His owner absolutely was not going to bring a fat Lab to show at Westminster. All that work paid off, and he was a great representative for our breed, which was reflected by his placement in the sporting group against all those other breeds. It should've been a nice spotlight moment for Labs. Instead, the interwebs were full of people talking about how obese he was and how his owner should be ashamed. That's how it is nowadays. What should be a nice moment and great accomplishment for a very nice lady, who treats her dog like a second child, and who unlike most people who show at that level at Westminster is a breeder/owner/handler who didn't use a professional to show her boy, was instead marred by a bunch of folks attacking her with no knowledge about her or her dog. Luckily, his owner, like most of us with our show dogs is used to being critiqued by folks who have never laid eyes or hands on our dogs in person.

I would rather breed to a fat Lab with better structure, kind expression, proper temperament, and coat than to a skinny Lab with a straight front, slab sides, and single or sparse coat. A fat dog is fixable (you diet him and work him more), and a fat dog isn't passing down fatness to his get. Less than desirable coat, structure, harsh expression, incorrect ear set, head shape, tail set, etc. that may take generations to fix, and those are things that are tricky to breed around if you are trying to improve multiple things. Now, I'm not saying that all field dogs are awful, and all show dogs are great examples. There are many nicely bred field dogs and there are many eyesores in the show ring as well.

I always suggest to those that don't like what they see in the show ring to bring what they believe are correct dogs and compete. There are judges that prefer more moderate dogs. If folks don't compete, then judges don't have the option to reward you. My chocolate boy has lost many times to dogs that were "more" but I continue to show him, and offer up a dog that I believe is well-structured with a clean topline, good reach of neck, good length of muzzle, and an appropriate amount of daylight underneath him; a dog that can do his job as a waterfowl or upland pickup dog in the manner of the breed's original style of working. He might not be your preference, and you might think all show dogs are fat slobs who couldn't retrieve a bird to save their life. That's your opinion and you are entitled to it.

dxboon, thanks for the reply. I think most labs will retrieve a bird if given a chance. I prefer a dog that will retrieve 30-50 if given a chance. I have nothing against you or any bench breeders. I think the Ideal lab is probably a moderate example that couldn't win a show or a field trial. I agree fat labs can be fixed. Ugly labs only look good with that FC in front of their name. I assume you are a member of the LRC? Do you think that the bench dogs of today really represent the breed standard? Again, don't want you to feel I am trying to attack. I would just like to have a civilized discussion if that is OK. If not I will retire back into the woodwork. Vic
