This may be a silly question but...

do you leave your television on for your dog(s) when you are away? I have always left the televison on when I leave for work. My boyfriend and I are planning on moving in together soon. He has 2 chow mixes and our philosophies on dog ownership are very different. I treat my two like my babies…like part of the family. He is kind to his dogs, but he treats them…I don’t know, like dogs. Anyway he said under no circumstance will he leave the TV on for the dogs once we find a place…I don’t know, I just think dogs need some sort of noise, stimulation when no one is home.
    Am I wrong about that?

sorta an annoying thing to say. what's his big issue with it ? the extra cost? why is he so firm on the issue?

I don't leave the TV on but I DO leave the radio on. every time i leave.

I've asked him what the big deal is and never received a clear answer. He says that I "baby" my dogs and that leaving a TV on is unnecessary.

meh i'm single and it's valentines day so ignore me :P but i'd be annoyed as heck if someone told me to stop doing something completely harmless, that doesn't encourage any annoying behavior, simply because they consider it "babying my dog" and was taking such a firm stand on it. what else with they oppose to? this isn't even something that promotes bad behavior.

I'd definitely ask what else he expects when you move in together (where they will be allowed/no allowed, where they will sleep, etc.) as you'll have to find a compromise on all those that work for both of you. Compromises will have to go both ways. so if he's being so adament about this he needs to be more open on some other issues.

But on the other side, i'd just say fine, but we will get a cheap clock radio (if you don't have a radio) and that will stay on. no harm no foul.

LOL, I get the Valentine’s Day thing completely. I’ve been known to be a little…less than warm and fuzzy on previous Valentine’s Days.

But yes, I was thinking of having a very in depth conversation about dog related things because my dogs are allowed everywhere in my home except the kitchen…he doesn’t want his dogs in his bedroom, on his living room furniture, they spend a lot of unsupervised time outside…
I love the man with all my heart, but I honestly don’t know what possessed him to get 2 dogs if he’s not more inclusive.

We leave the radio on. As well as providing some sense of company to the dog and the cats we also hope it sounds like we are home too and maybe discourage break in. You can buy videos made for dogs and cats, I think they have lots of animals on them. Oban only likes to watch Animal Planet.

I think it'll be very key to lay out both of your preferences for how to treat the dogs and then compromise on things you disagree with. BEFORE you move.
And be aware that the change in rules on top of the move will really be hard on the dogs and they'll require some patience the first little while as they adjust to the new environment, house mates and new rules. The TV thing i'd personally see if the radio can just be the new status quo and you can start with your pups before you move.

This sounds like a red flag to me, the way you have described it. Not just because he is saying no to you about something that is harmless, without compromise and for no reason other than "he says so", but because you're about to share a home with someone who has a different philosophy on dog rearing. Do you know exactly what these different philosophies in dogs entail in detail? Does he see you as an equal -- why does he think he can tell you what you can and cannot do? Can the two of you discuss a compromise of some sort? Is he jealous of the dogs and your love for them?

Maybe it's just me, but as long as a person wasn't raising hellion dogs, I would see loving touches toward their pets as sweet.

I agree that his refusal to compromise is an issue, especially when it comes to such harmless things. That said, we have never left TV or radio’s on for our dogs and they have been fine without it.
