We put a stair runner on our stairs after Scully slipped and fell down the stairs as a pup. She wouldn’t go up them again for a LONG time. We used to have to carry her up and down.

Depending what they are made of new rugs or flooring might gas off chemicals that a puppy would be close to, being down on the floor.
We do have stair treads so that should be ok. I think I'll give the current rug another cleaning and keep it for now. That way if the pup will have an accident I won't cry about it.

I spend much less than that! It aint pretty but I got some borrowed, some at garage sales and a two large $35 non slip ones from Ikea which are great. I had two levels to cover (so lots of cheap runners after the rugs) so I was looking for safe coverage not looks ;)
HULSIG Rug, low pile - IKEA
(even cheaper with US prices! it really is a decent rug)
if you bought really expensive persian rugs you would spend a helluva lot more time training pup so it wont pee on them....or maybe not and just buy new ones when they stain/stink :) just trying to be funny...
I'd clean it one more time and then liberally dose it with nature's miracle. And when your pup is house broken, buy a new rug.
You know, I’d forgotten until just now, but Mulder had had a few accidents on the rug (when he was seizing) at the end, and I was afraid of the puppies peeing on it when they were babies (a month or two later), but they never really did once they had learned to use the potty box in their whelping area. Even when we expanded their space and let them on the regular rug they didn’t have a problem with it, so I bet you’ll be fine.
I’d forgotten because we pulled up the rug last summer and replaced it with luxury vinyl and now it feels like we’ve never had carpet in there, LOL.
I have area rugs too, over my hardwoods.
We don't have much of a slippage issue, so I just have an area rug. A few puppies have pee'd on it over the years, but it still looks nice, so I just clean it, and use Nature's Miracle on it, and haven't had any problems. The pups at 10 months have been housebroken for quite some time though. :-)
