Maybe buy a cheap rug? not anything super fancy but just for now during the puppy phase? (I bought a bunch of cheap ones for Penny during her surgery which are now used for Rocky as he was slipping a bit on the hardwoord)
We have an 8x10 area rug (the rest is hard wood floors). Jules had quite a few accidents on it in his old age. I've cleaned that rug several times. I can still smell Jules on it if I stick my nose in it We're getting a new puppy (a male). I'm wondering if it will be inclined to mark on the rug because of that "other dog" smell. So I'm debating whether to clean it again or just buy a new one. But I don't want to shell out $$$ on a rug with a new puppy since it may have accidents on it. So, thoughts on whether the new pup will be encouraged to eliminate on the rug?

I got rid of my rugs with puppies, not just because of potential accidents, but they love to chew them. If puppy has an accident, you should be right there so you can take care of it immediately, so if it hits your hardwoods, you should be fine.

I would get a new one. Costco has decent ones for $100, I just picked up a few
You can get smaller area rugs from some of the big box stores for like 35 dollars. That's what I have lol.

Not my floors, no. They might slip on them if they are being absolutely nutso but they also slip on the rug in those cases. If you have super slippery floors, I guess it could be an issue. I have natural (real) oak. I know bamboo and some of the Pergo types can be pretty slick.
We put in laminate when Bruce was about 7 months, think he would be the last puppy for a long while. When he passed and Brooks came here 8 months later I didn't want him slipping and sliding, especially coming down the stairs. I picked up a cheap 6'x8' area rug at Lowes for about $60, and put a non slip pad under it. When I was teaching Brooks how to go down stairs, I kept him on leash and taught him "easy" which meant slowly and touch every step, which he still does today at 9 months. I'll most likely keep it there until he's at least 2.
