Flea and Tick Preventative-Simparica or Bravecto

Our new vet has a different line of Flea and Tick preventatives that they recommend compared to our old vet. Bacon has been on Frontline since he was a pup, and since then we have found several live, feeding ticks on him (no tick borne illnesses yet). I start to question the effectiveness of the frontline. I know it takes a bit for it to kill the tick, but still! We do checks every time he goes hunting, and every time he goes into tall grass or wooded area.

The new preventatives they recommend are both oral chewables, Simparica and Bravecto. Anyone use these, or another oral chewable? I am a bit wary of a chewable, but would be nice not to worry about the oil slick of frontline on his back once a month.

I’ve heard some bad things about Bravecto, but I don’t know whether it’s true or not. (You can google it or PM Charlotte K here - she knows about it). Never heard of the other one. Honestly, I’m not that comfortable with the idea of putting chemicals in (or even on, really) my dogs ...

My thoughts exactly. I am wary of what a chewable contains.

Our new vet uses Bravecto. We just have them their first dose on Friday. Bear threw up on Saturday, but it looks like he ate a furry yard intruder. I guess, my own judgement is still up on the air so I'm in he same boat as you.

Vomiting is the #1 side effect of Bravecto. With Bear being a puppy watch him closely.

I bought it last year but returned it to the vet before even giving one dose to Ram.
Some dogs have no issues with it at all.

I've been lucky with having only a couple attached ticks over the past few years. Sophie's had one, same with Bruce. So far none on Brooks. In conversing with my vet, he prefers the Seresto collars. I've never felt the need to use them, and I do a very thorough tick check anytime we are doing field work. I pulled two off of me last summer, none from the dogs.

I've heard bad news on Bravecto online, too. But my friends are giving it for years with no problem. Maybe they're just lucky.
I use Nexgard+heartgard for my dogs cause I don't want to take any risks. I think it's up to you and your vet. Hope you make a wise choice.

My breeder friends on Facebook groups are reporting all kinds of funky side effects from Bravetco, illness to infertility, and some strange symptoms, I wouldn't use it if was given some for for free. I haven't heard of the other one, so I don't have any information at all on that one.

Cassie has been on Bravecto for 2 years with no side affects at all. I tried the Seresto collar but kept finding ticks. At 1 year old, Cassie tested positive for Lyme and was treated. She has tested negative every year since. My vet was very skeptical at first of suggesting Bravecto but after researching suggested it as a good choice for us. Cassie is in the water constantly, which in fairness to the topicals, is definitely going to lower their effectiveness. Also, we hike at least 2 times a week in a state forest that is loaded with deer and ticks. I have found ticks on me but not a one on Cassie.

Any dog can react to anything, and one of my biggest issues with Bravecto is that it is supposed to stay in the system for three months. So if your dog does have a reaction, it is to something that will remain in their system for three months. Plus I've heard too many negative things about Bravecto in general. I have never heard of the other one you mentioned. I know a few people who use Nexguard with no issues. If you want something chewable, that is what I would go with. But chewable flea/tick preventatives make me nervous in general.
