What would happen if you rigged up a lab this way?

I don't like the idea of that but i'm not sure exactly why.

It reminds me of laser toys for cats/dogs....you can seriously make your pet obsessive with those.

Seems like the lazy man's way of exercising the dog.

I agree, like the dog in the video jumping into the bushes, he/she could be so focused on getting the ball it could put itself in harms way.

That said, I think Zeke would be able to get the ball, he's the first dog I've had that can actually catch his own tail with relative ease.

LOL. I took it as a joke and not meant to be serious. You think it was serious?

Honestly folks, loosen up. I found this vlog on YouTube where there was a similar concoction setup on a beagle with a treat at the end. The beagle eventually figured out the swinging timing and got the treat! It was cute! Calm down folks.

It was funny as all get out. BUT I wouldn't even let my dog have a kong without some supervision, let alone allow them to run around with that contraption on all by themselves. I know I'd be the idiot owner calling the vet saying... "Well, it was like this. I put a tennis ball on the end of a pole and attached it to the dog's harness. Then I turned around to get my cell phone and..."

I'd be interested to see how quickly they figured out the swing timing, or pushing it into a fence to bend the pole and get the ball too.

Nah, what would happen at our house is that the other two labs would be trying to catch the ball, and a 3-way, hell-for-leather foot race would ensue. Then the one that got the ball would dash away from the other two dragging the tethered lab behind. Natural tendency would be for the dragee to throw on the reverse thrusters, thus snatching the ball away from the successful dog and whip-lashing the third dog and then they'd all be in a moving scrum around the backyard. And I'd end up on the phone with the vet trying to describe the mechanism of injury.
