I need information regarding past breeding experience, special bits of information (like her raising seeing eye dogs), examples of how she takes care of puppies (the stimulating puzzle toys she creates for them). I'd like to know all that to be assured that, yes indeed, I am communicating with a good breeder. I'm shelling out a lot of money on this not only upfront but throughout the lifetime of the dog not to mention a 15 yr commitment (I hope!) so I think buyers are entitled to a bit more information.

Yes, this was my first experience dealing with a breeder. And if it wasn't for this forum then I'd be completely clueless on how to even start looking for one!
"Better" is going to be different for each person, and even equally "good" breeders (with regard to testing, competition, etc.) may not be equally suitable for every puppy buyer. Yes, buyers should ask questions, and expect to be asked a lot of questions in return before the parties agree to puppy placements. However, most good breeders are not super focused on selling puppies. They are focused on the welfare and continuation of their chosen breed, their own breeding program, and it may require more effort to get one of their puppies. Buying a well-bred puppy from a great breeder should not be like the experience of buying an exotic car where the right amount of money entitles you to almost anything from the dealership staff.

Glad you found a puppy and breeder that you like. I hope you have as fulfilling a relationship with them, as I do with the various breeders of my dogs.

In my mind, it's more of a sales agreement rather than a "contract". I usually use it to spell out things to the buyer that I don't want them coming back to me on. I make them initial points and sign the bottom, if they don't read, that's up to them. I have a copy in my file. Typically I find that there is nothing in there that usually makes that big of a difference as long as you aren't planning to do anything weird. If you "break" something, typically you aren't guaranteed on anything. Feed the wrong food as contracted, no guarantees on replacement puppies or money back. Stuff like that. I can see being hesitant about picking the contract apart. If there is a specific part that has you worried, PM me about it. Sometimes you just have to go with it. I have a 10 page contract from Tickle's breeder. I can't even tell you what it says. Most important, I paid $$, I got a dog. I can't keep dog, she gets it back. The rest doesn't matter to me. If she has HD, I keep her and assume MY responsibility. Things like Limited registration and breeding stuff, should be respected. But like I said PM me your specific concerns if you want.

I think my breeder has the most basic contract I came across thus far. Basically take care of the dog and she wants genetic tests done at 24 months. Fine. I don't mind finding out if something is wrong with the dog so I'll shell out the $$$. I'd rather find it early and address it then the alternative. I read other contracts that literally listed brands of food you were allowed to feed. Others required raw only diet. I didn't consider those breeders. If we got a 10 page contract my husband would read every word and probably memorize it. LOL When my parents were installing their home security system he literally read every fine print! That's what he does. He's an engineer so that's what you get. Ha!

A well written contract should be 2 sided... basically saying "I'll do this for YOU, if you do this for ME." Funny thing, a contract law professor just emailed me this morning to let me know that her 13yo had to be put to sleep on Sat. He was her 2nd lab from me. When she bought her first, she complimented me on my contract because it was 2 sided. When she came back for #2, I asked her in lieu of a deposit, if she'd review my contract and add in a first right of refusal clause. She was happy to do so!

I am not sure why your breeder would require genetic testing to be done (I'm thinking DNA type tests like EIC, CNM, PRA etc) since that's something she should know the status or relative status of already. Or do you mean eyes, hips and elbow certifications? In most cases, breeders won't require that unless the owner would like to convert from Limited reg to Full AKC registration (or in the case of a suspected warranteed issue like hip dysplasia). I know of one who made it a "lotto" type incentive to her buyers-- she put $200 or so into an escrow acct for each puppy and drew a name in the end from those who actually did hips and elbows on their dog. Winner took all.

Everyone works differently but to me, all warranties are null and void if someone decides not to play by the contract. No harm no fowl, but if I get the impression up front that the person isn't going to work w/ me, I will ask that they go elsewhere. Anne

I'm thinking since this is a rarer breed puppy (Welsh Springer) that all the dogs may be sold on full, even to pet homes, in order to not remove a potential dog from the gene pool. Gives the breeder the option to get back to this male sometime down the road possibly. That might be why they stipulate whatever testing is in this contract. Or maybe the parent club encourages its members to collect these data points since it's a smaller pool of dogs.

I don't remember my contract for Maverick, but for Bear there's a clause that states that if all requirements are not followed he health contract is voided.

There you have it-- I assumed Labrador here... not a follower of everyone.

My contract states that the puppy will be neutered. Every contract I read from this breed included health tests to be completed by the buyer.

I can only speculate that it may be for the purposes of collecting health data for a breed with such low numbers worldwide.

You paying for all the health testing may also be just a CYA matter in case a puppy buyer assumes the breeder will do it and pay for it. I have something in my contract that states if the dog has hip problems, they have to have the dog OFA'd, at THEIR expense. You'd assume people would know that they'd be responsible for that but many don't. It's probably more about making sure this rarer breed is producing sound dogs.
