It's possible your son just caught a cold and the red spot is a coincidence.
So we picked up our new pup yesterday, Archie. He's a Spaniel. When I was giving my son a bath I realized that he was sneezing a lot that day, had a runny nose, and there was a big red area on his chin. He hugged Archie with that side of the face prior. This is very odd to me. My son of 3 yrs old grew up with our chocolate lab without any symptoms. We visited the breeder twice and he didn't have any reactions. The first time the pups were 2 weeks old so he only slightly pet them. The second time they were almost 6 weeks old. He hugged them and pet them. He had no reaction. I don't understand what's going on. I see that his eyes have been red and watery all day and his nose is congested. Ugh! I do NOT want to give back our new baby! Do you think my son's immune system will adapt? I'm just completely surprised by this. He's been around other dogs too and never had any reactions. What gives?!

Allergies can vary greatly, each person reacts differently to different level of allergen. Thats why there is no such thing as a "hypoallergenic" breed, all dogs produce dander to different extents even the hypoallergenic ones. Not that spaniels are hypoallergenic. Your sons symptoms could be allergies. Hopefully not to the puppy! It is springtime in some parts and pollen has been in full bloom. Could it be environmental allergies? If it is the dog though, it's possible he could adapt over time. I have a mild dog allergy and have adapted to my two dogs. In the meantime I would make your son's room a dog-free zone and encourage him to wash his hands after playing with the puppy and avoid touching his face until he has done so.
Sending good thoughts that its not a puppy allergy!!!
Do you still have the chocolate lab now or was there a break between dogs (sorry, I can't remember the specifics of your story)? Like others have said it could be completely unrelated to the dog, but if it is related to the dog it could be that each dog produces different types of dander, and that also if you went between dogs for awhile your reaction to allergies can change. I grew up with dogs and was fine, but once I left for college every time I came home I had mild allergies to my dog. Now that I have dogs again and live with them full time, it's not a problem anymore.

Did they bathe him before sending him home with you? Could be the shampoo or something associated with his previous environment.

Could it be ringworm from the pup? I'm not sure what that rash looks like.

Oh that gives me hope. There was a 3 month break between our dogs. I'm pretty certain it's allergies and not a cold. He's acting fine. Like not tired or anything. I gave him 24 hr allergy meds a couple of hours ago and I see that his eyes are not red anymore though he's still congested. My hubby just told me that they had a Spaniel mix growing up. His sister had allergies to him but they cleared up in 2 weeks. I really really hope my son gets over this because we're all in love with this puppy!
