That's what I find crazy. If you ask what the dog is, have been told what it is, why would you EVER question that stranger and say things like, "That can't be a Lab, better ask for your money back." Why? Sometimes you just have to move on, or bite your tongue. I know I bite mine a lot, especially at the vet's office, or on our club community outreach days. Some of the things people say and believe about Labs. It's baffling.

Oh, we get that a lot: "What is she?" "What's she mixed with?" "Is she part Rottie, right? Newfie? Pitbull?"

When I've responded, "Nope, she's a Lab. Just a Lab," I've had strangers tell me I am mistaken—that she's clearly mixed with something. I even have had a friend who has a "Lab" (a black-haired rescue, probably part Lab, but looks very much like a large Flat-coated Retriever) say of her "Well, she's a really funny looking thing, isn't she? That's not usual for a Lab... her legs are really short, and she looks like a tank." I explained "No, this is the type; I assure you."

More laughter from him until I emailed him the breeder's website. The next time we spoke, he was a bit bashful.

Sometimes when someone asks, and say "Lab," and they say "Lab mixed with what?" I say "Another Lab, old-fashioned style, you know: take a boy Lab, put him in a girl Lab" and I wink.

I don't think it really convinces them, but I'll be damned if I feel the need to prove my dog's pedigree.

He's growing up nicely. I can see his sire in Hauser's face.

Hauser's mom, Evee, is one of my favorite Labs. She's a sweet, beautiful girl. You are lucky to have such a nice pup!

Yes but Rocky is not well bred by any means (he's a rescue, from a very bad breeder).

Honestly, people don't know what a lab looks like. And in some ways I cannot blame them, labs being so overbred willy nilly by anyone and everyone. PLUS every short haired dog in shelters and rescues are called "lab mix". Partly because it gets the dog more attention. But when I need a good laugh I search petfinder for "labrador". generally few dogs with any real lab content pop up (unless you have a lab rescue nearby!)

I understand asking the question; but "fighting" the answer is just plain rude. seriously. Even if someone tells me their adopted dog is a "lab" I won't push them on it even though I want to because, well that's rude. I've asked many people what their dogs are. Especially curly coated dogs, I am pretty bad at telling the difference most of the time between a doodle and say a Portugese Water Dog. (and I certainly don't want to ask someone with a portuge water dog if it's a doodle!!). I also can be weirdly stumped when it comes to some BC or Aussie's (sometimes it's clear which breed a dog is others...i don't know, especially if the aussie has a full tail haha).

I have the solution. While I have been asked:

    Is he a Lab?

Is he small for a Lab?

Is he a black Lab? My favourite and I'm always tempted to ask back, You don't know if he's black?

But no one has ever argued with me and I credit grey hair. If they think I'm wrong I guess they also think I might be crazy and thus dangerous or demented. Or old and fragile. Or I tend to only meet people who were brought up to respect their elders (though some seem to be my elders) and they are polite, if disbelieving. Let your hair go grey.
