    Hoku was attacked (she's Ok)

My husband was just taking Hoku out on her evening PT walk—lots of exercises, stairs, etc—in our local park (a very heavily wooded park, with a stream running through it, a great place).

The noticed a guy w/ two dogs ahead of them, and because we don't trust dogs we don't know, he gave them space. Lots of space.

At one point on the trail, the guy was ahead of them, trying to get the dogs under some large fallen logs, and apparently he let one of the dogs off leash. She was a mid-sized collie / shepherd mix, shorthair, and immediately turned around and charged my husband and Hoku.

The charge was not friendly: it was an attack. My husband got between her and Hoku, and started yelling, but the dog kept trying to get around my husband and at Hoku. She wasn't barking—just snarling and growling and going after her. My husband kept getting between them and yelling NO! NO! at the dog. I think that at one point the dog made contact w/ Hoku, as Hoku yelped.

My husband was about ready to step on the dog's foot and kick out an elbow.

The owner came up and apologized, and got the dog back on leash. As soon as he came up, the dog collapsed in a puddle of sorry, so I think it might have been a rescue dog who is extremely reactive.

My husband came home a bit shaken, and very angry (and he's the chillest person I know, so that's a big deal).

My worry about the "yelp" from Hoku had been either a bite (which we can't find) or a leg (Nooo!) injury. She's walking just fine, and no signs of a bite, so I think it was more her being nervous about the attack.

I swear to god. Had I been there, THAT dog would need a bloody knee replacement, and SOON.

Wow. I'm so happy Hoku is ok. Like you, anyone or anything hurting one of my dogs will see a level of crazy that would make Freddy vs Jason seen like a Disney movie.

I'm not proud to say it but I actually kicked a golden that attacked Jules. The owner had him off leash even though it's illegal and he just snapped at Jules for no reason. And I was yelling NO! But the dog wasn't stopping. I kicked it. Not horribly hard but enough to jolt it. The owner was running across the field with her other dog to get her Golden. I was so shaken and pissed off.

I'm glad Hoku and your husband are OK...there's a dog that shouldn't have been allowed off-leash.

Geez, I hope the yelp was a bite and not her bad leg.

Check her all over again today. When Oban was attacked about a month ago I thought he was fine, no blood, nothing, even though the other dog had him by the ears and neck. Later that night several swollen areas. The next day multiple scabbed over puncture wounds on his ears and neck, yet I never saw or got blood on my hands from checking him immediately after we got the other dog off. With help from a third party who bravely came to help.

Wonder what set that off? To just run at you and launch into attack with no preliminaries is very strange. Good thoughts for Hoku and you two as well.

That happened to us with both of our Akitas when they were puppies...a female going after Kiku and a male going after Kaze. The owner of one caught up to his dog in time to grab its collar before any damage was done but Bob had to kick off the other one.

A friend of mine's Keeshond was attacked by a GSD that came hurling out of a van on the parking lot as she and her dog arrived at their car to go home.

Unprovoked attacks. At least the GSD wasn't intended to be off-leash (just careless owner with a door open) but the two that attacked our pups were off-leash despite our leash law.

I would not hesitate to kick a dog to save mine but in our recent case I was afraid anything I did would rip Oban's ears off.

So glad both your husband and Hoku are OK! Such a frightening incident. Luckily none of our dogs have been involved in anything like that. Guess instincts would kick in and I'd do anything to protect a furkid.

Glad everyone is ok. It's a scary situation, we've had a German Shepard come after us twice while walking our dogs around the neighborhood, and he goes off every time we walk past. Scary.

I know—when my husband told me about the yelp, my first thought was "her leg!" (though at this point, her surgery leg is healed—I was worried about the other one), but I can't see any sign of trouble in either. She's been cleared for "light fetch" by the PT, and last night after the incident I tossed a ball—gently—for her in the back yard, so I got to see her gait. No issues (indeed, healed, happy, and now 12 lbs lighter, she was so springy my husband was all "Stop that. I'm not comfortable with that much bounce!").

I'll check her again today. Still so darned mad.

I think the dog was just reactive. There had been no interaction between them earlier. The dog was wearing a metal prong collar, so my husband wonders if it was generally hard to control / untrained.
