I don't know what the heck is going on this season but they are EVERYWHERE! My back yard is basically the landing yard for deer in the area. The other day I saw at least 22 deer in my yard! Craziness. I put Frontline Plus on Archie a couple of weeks ago which is proving to be completely useless. I've used it on Jules in the past and found a few ticks on him throughout the years. But now, OMG I find a tick or two on Archie at least once a week! What is going on?! The vet gave us a chewable tick/flea prevention. I read the side effects and I just don't feel comfortable using it especially on a puppy. The breeder's vet said NO CHEWABLES FOR PUPPIES. Her vet recommended a collar. But the collar's come with warnings for children not to touch and I have a 3 yr old. What do I doooo?!

I’ve heard that ticks in many areas are becoming resistant to Frontline - we haven’t used it in a couple of years. I’m leery of the chewables even for adults, and the problem with the collars for us is my guys swim frequently. Mostly we’ve been literally going over them with a fine toothed comb every time we come home from the park, but even so we find one every couple weeks on one dog or another. I’m thinking of trying K9 Advantix as it is supposed to be better than Frontline, but I prefer to avoid chemicals if I can.
Fortunately we don’t have many ticks in the yard - it’s mostly in the park so we can control their exposure better.

I'm expecting a terrible tick season because we had such a mild winter. Usually a good sustained hard frost kills 'em off. We had a brief bit of cold and snow around the new year, but it's been exceptionally warm since then. How was winter near you? I've heard you need two weeks straight of below freezing weather to kill off the bugs.

Just got a message from our trainer that ticks were horrible this year.
Have not had to worry for years but going to keep a close eye on Archie this year.

With climate change and things getting warmer, more and more creatures are slowly moving north. Rattle snakes, usually in southern Ohio and Indiana are now moving into northern regions. Ticks and other pests are moving north. The winters aren't cold enough anymore to really kill them and the summers are plenty warm enough for them. Michigan is having a really hard time with the Emeral Ash Borer, which is killing trees by the hundreds. This used to be only in the southern states its now spread into Canada.

Does anyone spray their yard for ticks? A friend of ours says he does it every season. But with a puppy who loves licking everything and a kid I'm concerned about the pesticides.
I use seresto collar on my dog and cats
we spray a organic pet/children friendly spray.
Both seem to work great . the spray i do 7-8 times over the spring to fall.
As you said we are limited with puppies last year and dogs that lick grass. also we have kids who play on the grass.
