it would be short term and speed up house training (because the more accidents they have the more a pattern is established the harder it is to re-train).

If I'm reading correctly, this puppy is already 4.5 mos old. Is there by chance a UTI or something going on in your home life that has slowed down potty training? I always worry about apartment dwellers w/o a balcony or such w/ the potty training process. Like others here, I'm really not a fan of pee pads at all! Anne

Thanks Tanya. And actually, when I'm sleep he's sleeping (except for when he goes up front to relieve himself). I should probably take my emotions out of it and crate him at night.

Actually I do have a balcony...and we're moving into a home with a huge back yard on June 1st. However, I fail to see how living in an apartment has anything to do with it being that when I move into my home it won't be as if I'm going to leave my door open at night so that he can come in and out as he pleases.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I was referring to pup owners who live several floors up, where trying to get puppies out every few hrs in the day/ night to potty train the normal way is much more difficult. It's a lot easier to pick them up right out of their crate, carry them out before they wake up too much, as they almost always have to potty as soon as they wake up-- whether that is to an apt bldg balcony potty area (fake grass or potty pellets etc) or to real grass. If puppies always have a place in the house to potty (ie pee pads) and are forced to be inside most of the time, you are going to have a harder time teaching them the appropriate place to potty (outside).

With my litters, pups are in an ex pen w/ a potty pellet pool in my attached garage except for play time outside when old enough, of course. My 12 wk old pup still sleeps in the expen at night so I don't have to get up and tend to her, and it's worked well for me. Once she builds up her bladder strength a little more in a week or 2, she'll sleep in a crate like the bigger girls.

The owners I've had, using pee pads, seem not to get the potty training down pat nearly as quickly. Pip has had a couple (3?) "tinkles" on the floor but that's to be expected since she often gets playing w/ the older dogs and forgets to "tell" me. Within a week or so, I certainly hope we are solid.

But again, if he still doesn't have bladder control at 4.5 mos, you really should look into having him tested for a UTI. That is a huge volume of (yes, concentrated/ stinky!!) urine by that age, and often even stinkier if there is a bacterial infection it seems.

I am sorry, but this seems a little bit snarky to me. We all know that getting a young puppy outside in time to potty from an apartment building can be challenging to say the least, depending on how many flights of stairs you need to get down etc...

Letting 4.5 month old puppy run free at night to pee all over your apartment is not the answer. Taking your puppy out on a schedule and confining him when you can't watch him is a good suggestion, and stopping the pee pads since he doesn't use them anyways. I hope you get your deposit back on your apartment after your puppy has peed all over the place. Congrats on your new home though!

windycanyon Thanks for the clarification and I that does make more sense to me.

Shelley - I'm going to let this be the last I say on this because I have gotten some really valuable feedback. I never once said my puppy is peeing all over my apartment. I said the area surrounding the pee pads...like I've seen him standing on the pad but the urine lands on the carpet. Didn't mean to sound "snarky" I just didn't see how living in a house would change the issue I'm having.

I apologize for the misunderstanding, I assumed it was a serious amount of urine for you to label the thread "Help!!! The smell is killing me". I hope the Nature's Miracle gets the odor out so you get back your deposit, and that your puppy gets housebroken soon. Have a great day!

Yes Nature's Miracle! As far as cleaning carpets goes, Nature's Miracle makes a carpet shampoo as well.
