Help!!! The smell is killing me

My puppy is pretty good about using his training pads at night. However, sometimes he “misses” and urinates around the area where I keep his training pad. So over the weekend I decided to use my shampooer to clean the carpet. To my surprise the smell got worse instead of better.
When I did a little research online I found that cleaning urine with a steam cleaner sets the smell into the fibers of the carpet and does indeed make it worse.
Has anyone ever made this mistake? Is there anything at all I can buy or maybe a home remedy that might work?
I can’t believe I ruined my carpet! Uugh!

You need to use an enzymatic cleaner like Nature’s Miracle (definitely found at pet stores, but places like Walmart or even a supermarket might carry it as well). It will work, but the smell will get worse for a bit before it gets better.

For what it’s worth, we’ve raised 5 puppies so far and never used training pads - we kept them in crates and if they needed out in the middle of the night we woke up and took them out (most didn’t after the first week or so). I think using training pads turns housebreaking into a 2 step process ... first they need to learn to use the pads then they need to learn not to use pads and to go outside. Makes more sense to me to just teach them to go out in the first place.

Annette beat me too it! Nature's Miracle is the stuff to get. I found that if you spray with the Nature's Miracle and then place a damp towel over the area and let it dry it works quite well. Another reminder of puppy days I would sooner forget.

Thanks JackK. I will definitely use a damp towel. I got so lucky with my oldest guy. When he was a puppy he literally trained himself. We had our routine down and he never had any accidents in the house. But my little Armani is taking a little longer, bless his heart.

I may buy a few bottles of this Nature's Miracle. Something tells me I'm going to need more than one.

Just remember, the more opportunities they have to pee in the house, the longer it will take to housebreak. It sounds to me like the puppy has too much freedom, too soon. Nature's Miracle is the best.

He's in his crate while I'm at work. I come home mid-day to walk them both and take care of my son. When I head back to work he goes back in his crate. I just don't have the heart to crate him at night too.

Then take him in bed with you and take him outside to go potty when he needs to go.

I tried putting him in bed with me a couple of tome but then my 2 year old lab gets jealous and gets out of the bed. Being that Armani, falls asleep under the bed I figured I wouldn't keep upsetting the older dog.
But you have a point. If I put him in bed with me that would eliminate him wandering to the living room in the middle of the night. I'll try it again.

it might be worth biting the bullet and crating him or getting an x-pen for at night. An x-pen may give more space (but not more than he can keep clean) and if he has gotten into the habit of peeing at night you may need to address that first.

it would be short term and speed up house training (because the more accidents they have the more a pattern is established the harder it is to re-train).
