    Cassie needs surgery

So a couple of weeks ago, Cassie started limping, non weight bearing on her rear hind leg. She and Tobey play rough and he jumps on her frequently. Trying to stop that. Finally brought her to the vet and its a torn cruciate. He's recommending the suture fixation technique instead of a TPLO. I've read over the years everyone's challenges with the TPLO procedure and its recovery. Don't know if this is the best answer for her. She is now 10 years old, but still active on the weekends. I guess its worth a try but would appreciate your input. Just beginning to get my head around how to manage her recovery.

Hi there, we just went through bilateral TTA surgery with Stella, primarily recommended by the vet because of her age and his experience/preference with the surgery. The big difference with your situation is that Stella is 3 and has a 3 yo buddy, Anthony. At that age, we didn't have much choice and the type of surgery was totally dependent on what the vet recommended (I also read that you want the procedure that your ortho vet does the most of). Our regular vet does the suture technique but does not 'cut bone'. We went for the ortho vet for that, it's basically all he does.

There is no easy recovery! We just got our sutures out, and she is walking leashed for potty and to 'smell the yard'. No interaction with Anthony. Our next milestone is 8 weeks.

    Good luck with Cassie.

Yeah i struggled with whether to take her to an ortho vet, and if she were younger i would for sure. I'm hoping that the lesser surgery will be sufficient given her age, and that this was from specific trauma. I guess I can always move on to TPLO/TTA if this fails. Anyone with any thoughts on braces? before, after? Reading a bunch about the A Trak brace.

Someone else had a 10 year old recently with a torn CCL, here's her thread:

ACL surgery for senior? - Page 2

In another thread someone mentioned a Yahoo group that sounds like it's for non-surgical repairs but I don't know what that group is to guide you to it

    More than likely CCL Tear

Gosh, there have been a lot of pups on here need surgery for a torn CCL!
