Not only that, but the price of these special puppies is probably more than what a good breeder charges

So Crafther and I were at a mall today and walked by a "pet store". They had labradoddles, Cavon-ton's, golden retriever and several "new breeds I had never heard of. The place was full of people oohing and awing over the cute puppies. They had signs up all over the place saying "financing available" and no prices anywhere in sight. All I could think of was how sad. All these "special" breeds, no parents on site, probably no clearances for anything. All these people thinking how wonderful their new puppy is going to be. They could get lucky and get a good puppy but I have my doubts. Then all these puppies will end up in a shelter somewhere when they run up a big vet bill. Sad.

A mall with a pet store near us closes at 9 pm on Saturday and doesn't open until 12 noon on Sunday. As far as I can tell, the puppies don't get water for that time period. It eats me up.

I was one of those people who got my last chocolate lab , Jules, from a mall pet store. That chain is no longer in business either. I walked into the store and saw a beautiful chocolate lab with green eyes listed for $800. I asked to see him in the play area. He was Soooo full of energy. He immediately drew a crowd. That night I came home and told my mom about him. I was 23 yrs old and Jules was 12 weeks. I knew nothing about the breed. I did some research online about labs and thought "yes! THAT sounds awesome. " So my mom and I bought Jules. I knew nothing about dogs only that I always wanted one. The lady at the store told me "Feed him once a day and walk him twice a day and you're set!" Jules lived to be 12 years and 8 months. I didn't give up on him when he was a huge PITA. He was my Jules. I joined this forum because of him. That was probably like 10 yrs ago. Man I feel old now.

Oh my... I didn't know we had any of those in Ohio. It's so sad isn't it?

Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.

Haven't seen any mall pet stores in IL. But, there is PetLand and it's horrible. The best they could show me about a yellow lab was his pedigree (only one dog in 3 generations had hip cert but don't know what it was) and the fact that they took his temperature every day. Had them take him out to play and he would not interact with me at all. His glassed in cage had a wire bottom and was way too small. I felt so sorry for him.

We don't have a pet store in our nearest mall any more but there are a few puppy stores still around. I refuse to go into any of them for any reason. The last time I ventured into one...to buy something for the fish ponds (don't remember if they had puppies or kittens but had rabbits and the like), I noticed dead reptiles and amphibians in their aquariums...told the manager....and got a "yeah, well...." response. Never again...not for any reason.
I know a couple of people who'd gotten puppies from a store and both had serious health problems. One had something that I recall was something like Cushing's...from when she was really young...the other had young adult heart issues. The one woman had always rescued and had healthy old-age dogs....this was her only store-bought dog...she swore never again, she'd learned her lesson. The man...well...he's got some serious age on him...never trained his dog at all...just wanted company...I don't think he's aware of the whole puppy store problem (and this will inevitably be his last dog).

I would be standing outside the store with a sign that says puppy mill dogs with pictures - save a life dont' shop adopt.

I didn't know they had mall pet stores in the US anymore. I thought everyone bought their puppymill dogs on the internet.
