The author is a little overboard, esp when he mentions in the comments below "Monsanto's Roundup" as being bad for dogs, cats, birds and people. Does he have ANY clue that there are hundreds of glyphosate products out there now that have the same formulation as "Roundup"? The patent expired years ago. Hmmmmm. I'd take this w/ a grain of salt, however, I have watched the lawn services who my neighbors have had over the years and they have idiots working for them. I spot spray my lawn, use fertilizer but have plenty of irrigation water too. Common sense needs to prevail.

We don't use anything here...and the resident groundhog appreciates our plantains and violets, leaves everything else alone. Any lawn with a little yellow sign doesn't get walked on and feet get a washcloth when we get home anyhow. No munching...when we can avoid it...except on our own property. I'm not sure Bob is this vigilant when he's on his own with the dogs, though, and practically everyone on our street has a lawn service. Some get signs and some don't. Sunnie is a 24/7/365 cow....Dan goes through spurts (probably if he's uncomfortable).

We do treat the front, and the dogs do walk/play out there occasionally, but don’t have free access and we keep them off it until it’s been watered in. We only use organic fertilizer in the back where they spend most of their time, but certainly neighbors use stuff and we don’t usually restrict them from snacking on the edges. Knock wood none of ours have had problems - our one with known cancer came to us at age 11, and had already developed it.

It does make you think though - Scully and Mulder’s breeder lost 3 dogs at age 12, during the same year from cancer. One was Scully’s littermate, the other two were Mulder’s parents. Both Scully and Mulder lived to 15+ (so similar genes, different environment). I doubt she used lawn chemicals but at the time I remember wondering if there was something in the ground or water in her area ....

Yeah, since I breed, I just don't risk it in the back yard at least, fertilizer scares me although Anne knows her stuff.

The front yard looks great! Nice lush green grass, pretty flowers, trees, roses, Rosemary, the back yard is different types of grass that has survived, weeds, and a few fruit trees.

Considering the statistics have stated for years the lifespan of labs is 10-12, I consider 12 good years to be much more acceptable than 12 crappy years w/ allergies, dysplasia or whatever.

I've known MANY farm dogs who lived well beyond the average btw! Shoot, I grew up w/ a dachshund (obese, no less) that lived to 16 ornery years. Our massive Saint Bernard lived to 10. This all in the era of truly wicked pesticides... some flown on w/ helicopter so there was drift regularly onto the lawn (orchards right there).

Honestly I blame a lot of the cancer on crappy genetics/ immune systems. Look at some of the breeds that are dying of cancer at 7 now, and it's clearly running in lines.

Not a big fan of the chemicals, myself, but just in general, not completely about the dogs. No grass, native plants/flowers, thick mulch, living ground cover. I am into plants that feed the birds and the bees, so another reason not to use chemicals.

Interesting article. Thought provoking, though I'd like to see more studies, more evidence. Having said that . . .

. . . though we do fertilize our turf, our property is otherwise chemical free. Everything else gets compost, or manure of some kind, if it gets anything at all. Our feeling is that instead of using such adulterants, our money is better spent buying plants to diversify our habitat which in turn improves its attractiveness to diverse fauna.

Digressing a bit. Several years ago I listened to a call-in gardening show on CBC; the guest was a master gardener. One question for people was: "What's the worst weed you can think of?" There were unsurprising responses - dandelions, creeping charlie, Johnson grass. The master gardener rated Kentucky Bluegrass as an invasive and obnoxious weed because in his opinion it's overplanted, overfertilzed, overwatered, and receives overapplications of pesticides and herbicides. I kind of agree and was amused by the firestorm of callers who disagreed.
