    Learned something about Fitzi.

We recently went to an outdoors party featuring a mix of people we knew and people we didn't, plus the host's dog (a BC cross, a good boy). We took the Achilles and Fitzi.

The host dog issued several invitations to play. While ours wanted to play it was an unfamiliar place, unfenced, next to a busy-ish road, so we preferred to keep them on leash.

Achilles, as we expected, was open to meeting people of all ages and sizes. Tail gently waving, ears and lips relaxed.

Fitzi was really good about meeting and greeting. A little less comfortable yet still fine, including doing well meeting a lad about three years old. There was one significant exception.

An adult guest arrived after we did. He wore very dark wraparound sunglasses and a gimme cap pulled down. When Fitzi saw him his tail waved stiffly and we could hear him say 'rrrrrrr rrrrrr rrrrr.' In human speak, 'I don't like your appearance.' Since we didn't know the guest it was easy to keep our distance, avoiding unpleasantness.

It's entirely possible, even likely, that the guest is a really good person. It seems that Fitzi has had a less than a pleasant experience involving someone wearing a gimme cap and shades. Not necessarily a bad experience, a less than pleasant one. So that's something for us to keep in mind.

It was a good reminder to pay attention to our pups' perception of people.

What you just shared is so important.

It's a shame that you did not know the person and was able to remove the cap and glasses to see if that made a change in Fitzi. If not, you know you don't want to be friends with that person.

Jet once barked threateningly at my sister. We were at Sis's house and she came out of her bedroom wearing her sunglasses. We think it was the sunglasses on in the house that did it. Sis took them off immediately and Jet got all waggy and sheepish looking. Sis always wore the sunglasses outside on our walks but never in the house before. So my bets would be on the hat and glasses.

    I forgot . . .

We recently went away for a week and boarded the boys at our regular kennel. When we bailed them out the operator told us a story. Several days into their stay (so by then, Fitzi was familiar with her) she went into the kennel area wearing . . . gimme cap and sunglasses. Fitzi went 'rrrrrrrrrr'. She was puzzled for a moment yet astute enough to remove cap and shades, after which Fitzi was fine.
